ICE in EV Mode ... Again

    my gen II never did, but it rarely gets over 100 degrees here.

    the problem is, if the ice fires, and you don't know why, why would you turn the heat on to warm the battery?
     
  3. . You have it backwards, when the ICE fires, you may as well turn the heat on. That is if you still are a dedicated Winter EV er. Who cares why?

    Which is what I've been doing lately. I hit the fan button on low to take the chill out when the ICE starts up. Since I've been doing this, there has been very little fogging up of the glass since it's been burning off condensation in the HVAC system.

    No, actually it would drop into turtle mode. You had to control the cooling yourself. Back then, the A/C wasn't electric either. So, firing up the engine to cool off would do the trick. Of course, that long ago it didn't get as hot as it does now and the motor wasn't as powerful.
     
  6. Oh yea, the defrost fan works great one of the other interesting points is in running in HV, some blending of both modes occurs. The computers determine all this, but the car does not know the terrain ahead, only the driver knows this. If one is cresting a small hill in EV. With a long hill down then the driver can then put the car in HV to charge and at the same time, save EV charge and still show 100 mpg+on the Instant mpg indicator. I plan on continuing this procedure also in summer sans defroster,fans and heat. The warmup should be faster in the summer. It seems like starting out in HV is the key to it all.

    Having already been through the annual cycle with my PHV, that has been confirmed. There was snow still when I took delivery. I witnessed the decrease in warm-up time and the increase in EV capacity. Taking advantage of HV on the first part of some drives became routine.

    I took advantage of the warm spell yesterday. The temperature got a bit above freezing. So after recharging, I moved the Prius into an enclosed ramp and let it sit there for 6 hours. In there, it was 40°F. The outside temperature dropped to 30°F. That made me quite curious, since I wouldn't need the heater.

    Could I drive the entire capacity without the engine starting? I hadn't ever actually tried that, since climbing out of the river valley at 56 mph isn't the best use of it on a 17-mile drive. But I was wanted to push the limits in cool conditions.

    Sure enough, it was an effortless drive... all EV until depleted, including the climb. That should provide an interesting basis of comparison for when the temperature drops again. With it considerable colder last week, I wasn't able to identify a pattern. Smaller increments may be revealing. I'll keep watching.

    We know is the engine starts even without the heater on when the temperature outside is below freezing. The circumstances which trigger it are still elusive though.

    because, if you turn the heat on, the ice runs longer than if you just let it warm up and shut down. i don't want it to run at all, that's the purpose of my investigation and experimentation.

    did my commute last nite, 45 degree garage, 27 outside, drove around until the range was down to 11.8 from 12.3, then left on my route, kept it under 40 mph on the ice trigger are and the ice never came on.
     
  12. We have gone into this ad infinitum, believe it or not the car it totally unaware of what you want. But continue your attempts to force the car into undesigned procedures. I will flow with the car and then the car flows with me.

    thanks! i'm not sure which is the anomoly though, the ice coming on, or staying off.:) since i've been experimenting, i've had more luck keeping it off, which should improve my mpg's over the next tankful, not to mention wear and tear on the engine coming on every day just to go thru the warm up cycle.

  17. Except from our previous knowledge of the Prius we are all unaware of almost all the parameters regarding the Pip. So far nothing seems available for the Pip in the way of Repair Manuals Do I have that right?
