    im new to the prius i own a gen 3 . now toyota says 72 to 74 mpg weather its urban extra urban etc / so far ive done about 1000miles to start with i was getting 52 to 53mpg after playing and using the cruze whichs seems to give better mpg im up to 55/60mpg . i did do a run out say 60mile now i will admit i drove 45 in a 60 zone and 57 to in a 70 zone to achieve 66mpg . but 72 to 74 can it really be done in a normal drive ? you go up a hill and it kills the mpg so i can only see it being done on very flat roads and going down hills not up them? wats your average and wats your best? one last thing in the computer it says the best mpg was 86mpg done over 3 miles? they must have bin pushing it to get this? im in the uk

    The UK testing methods are even less realistic than the U.S. methods.

    Some of us get mpg that high once you take into account the difference between U.S. and Imperial gallons. That being said wintertime is hard on fuel efficiency.

    I have seen 75 MPG in a Gen II over 130 miles across Ohio/Indiana. Total MPG for that trip was 65MPG. That is all highway miles.

    Yep, on all of the above. And 72 miles per Imperial gallon (which we don't use in the US) is 59.95 miles per US gallon.

    Yep,

    In 2010 I drove from Northants to Cornwall, round Newquay, St Austell, the Eden Project etc. The area is hilly, but the weather was warm (just over 20C, this is critical!). Cruise was limited to 60mph (indicated, actual speed is only about 56mph, so you end up in the slow lane just trailing a lorry. very low stress driving and even on this 300mile trip we are talking 5 hours 20 mins at 56mph or 4 hours 20 at 70mph [about 76 indicated])
    Anyway, that tank was 73.3MPG.

    When it's cold, and you drive short distances, or fast, you will get about 50mpg.

    Prius FE tips
    ============

    1) the weather has to cooperate: 65 F to 85 F (18 C to 30 C), no rain/sleet/snow/ice/fog, no high winds - a clear sunny day. Bad weather lowers your FE - don't drive in bad weather if you can help it.
    2) Select/drive on roads which are dry, clean, and smooth - rough roads lowers your FE - smooth roads increases FE.
    3) pick a time to travel when there is no or little traffic - No other vehicles, pedestrians, or animals.
    4) pick a road with no traffic stop signs or signals ( or pick traffic signals that you can time to run through without stopping)
    5) use 100% gas if you can - the less ethanol the better
    6) inflate your tires to the max side wall (44 psi front/42 psi rear for most tires)
    7) limit your top speed to 30 to 50 mph (48 to 80 kph) with a target top speed of 35 mph (56 kph) - high speed lowers your FE
    8) minumum trip length should be 10 miles (16 km) or 50 minutes. Short trips lowers MPG

    9) hook up (and learn how to use) a ScangaugeII($160) or Torque on an Android to your Prius THEN learn the following hypermiling techniques:
    Driving without Brakes (DWL) + Smart Braking = maintain your momentum,
    Pulse and Glide (P&G) = driving on flat roads (low speed)- efficiently apply power
    Super Highway Mode (SHM) + ScanguageII = driving on flat roads (@hi speeds - efficiently applying power requires Xgauges of a ScangaugeII or its equivalenti)
    and
    Driving with Load (DWL) = driving on hilly roads - conserve gravitational potential energy

    10) never/avoid letting the battery State of charge drop below 50% (4 bars) - if there is a risk of the SOC <50% then set the throttle mode to Power or Normal

    Things you can add to your Prius during the winter to increase your fuel efficiency
    ======================================================
    1) grill block
    2) engine block heater

    disclosure:
    ========
    So far my best tank for my 2010 Toyota Prius III is 71 mpg (US gallons ) over 800 miles using 10% ethanol 87 octane regular gas. This translates to 85 MPG UK. I am using Yokohama Avid S33D All Season Radial Tires inflated at 44 psi front, 42 psi rear. I grill block when the temps drop below 60 F. My best 16 mile commute has been 85 mpg. My average is 60 mpg ( 73 MPG UK. However, I represent the top 2% of drivers wrt to fuel efficiency on fuelly.com so I'm not normal ). My fuel efficiency drops by 20% in the late fall to early Spring then jumps back up in the late Spring to early Fall. My higher summertime fuel efficiency compensates for my lower wintertime fuel efficiency. I'm not alone nor am I the best wrt to FE here on Prius Chat.

    The Toyota Prius is one amazing car, and it is one of my favorite toys.

    hope this helps

    Walter

    wow you sound like you know your s888t scangauges are they easy to use set up etc? wat will it do for me im a cab driver so i would say i do alot of short trips most of the time . so you think eco mode is not the best for me ?

    Most taxi cab drive in the city - stop-n-go or slow-n-go driving. Getting the best mileage maybe the way to go if your taxi is charging by the distance/zone travelled. If a taxi is charging by the minute then your fare will get really upset if they see you hypermiling since it would take longer and thereby increasing your fare's cost. If you are charging by distance/zone travelled and your fare might be okay with a slightly longer travel time then go ahead and optimize your FE. I would recommend normal mode or power mode over eco mode - because it will help lessen the risk of the Battery SOC from dropping below 50% in a traffic jam. ScangaugeII numerical displays are best when you are driving the same route over and over again - the graphical HSI display is easier on the eyes when you are traveling new and/or different routes.

    Assuming 72~74 mpg is miles per imperial gallon, 73 mpg (average) converts to 60.8 mpg US.

    Something else to bear in mind, if the numbers you're getting are from the in-dash display, it is notoriously optimistic. With 2 years of calcualated mileage, my average error is 8%. If that were your in-dash error, you'd actually need to be seeing around 78 mpg (Imp) to get the rated 72~74.
