PiP/Volt January 7-11 Switcheroo

    He went 35.3 miles with a full charge, not 45 miles.

    If he used the gas engine (in mountain mode) to gain additional 9.7 EV miles, his gas mileage won't be 37-38 MPG. It'll be 22-23 MPG.

    Which EV do you think he'll get 45 miles with only 12 kWh of electricity?

    Are you suggesting Volt will stretch from 35.3 miles to 45 miles? I doubt it unless he drives like Jeff N and live near him (same terrain). :)

    This morning's commute started out with a full charge of 36 miles. By the time I got to work I had gone 45.6 miles total. 36 of that were EV miles, 9.7 were gas miles, & 0.23 gallons used for an average of 190.5 MPG.

    I did not get a chance to record what the "This Charge" Energy Info screen said at the end of yesterday. However, trip B says the total was 104.3 miles with 1.3 gallons used and an average of 80mpg for the day. I was able to grab 2 partial charges, one at work which gave me about 15 miles of EV range, and another partial charge which gave me another 8 or 10 miles.

    On the way home I had to get gas for the car. When I was about 20 miles from home, it said I had about 45 miles of gas range left. Or about a 25 mile safety margin. When I was about 10 miles from home it said the gas was low and no longer gave a mile estimate. A couple of miles later I got a "gas is super low, let's find a gas station ASAP, please" message on the nav screen. I finally was able to get gas about 2 miles from home. It took 7.863 gallons. So apparently I still had a gallon or so left of gas. The situation was not quite as dire as the car made it to be.

    Given that I don't normally do stacking with the PiP, I'm not likely to try with the Volt.

    I don't see how they get a full 3.2 kwh.

    I just completed charge # 117 on Chargepoint. (More than that actually since at work we regularly plugin each others cars and others plug me in more often than I do others since I'm on the opposite side of the bldg).

    Anyway, I've charged from empty maybe 25 of those times. I never charged more than 2.95 kwh and only a 4-5 times more than 2.90 kwh. I just finished charging with 0.3 miles left (out of 13.1 to start) and I took only 2.75 kwh. I realize that because I usually drive in EV only for days at a time that even when I show 0.0 miles left there is still some HV mode capacity, but isn't this about 3% or about 0.1 kwh total?

    These are numbers (essentially) measured from the wall and are based on 220v charging. I actuually see, very consistently 2.25 - 2.26 kw as the charging rate from Charepoint. Therefore, if the charging current is 11.7 - 12.0 amps this means the actual voltage is closer to 190 volts. At home with 115v I see 11.7 amps.

    It will be interesting to see the stats at the end of the week.
    After you switch back to your normal cars it would be interesting see see your normal stats for a week.

    3.2 kWh and 0.3 gallons to go 25 miles means that the gas engine was on at some point during the 25 mile drive. The engine may have been on in a low load mode. It's still using electricity to help drive the car, but it's not in a pure EV mode at that point. Call it super hybrid mode, or hybrid boost, or blended mode if you want, but at that point the gas engine is on and providing some of the motive force.

    2.25 kW is what you are pulling from the wall. That's the max that the charger in the car can pull. After charging conversion losses, you probably ended up delivering about 1.8 to 2.0 kW into the battery. The chargepoint EVSE should actually be pulling about 9 to 9.5 amps at 240 volts. I can't see it working very well at 190 volts.

    Another round of errands on city roads during my lunch break today. I got a full charge at work this morning but I got distracted and missed the switchover from EV to HV. It happened somewhere between 12 and 13 miles so 12.5 is a good guess.

    One of the few things I dislike about the Volt are the incessant noisemakers. The actual drivetrain is nice and quiet but the Volt loves to honk its own horn.

    Plug it in and it toots the horn once to say it's charging, twice to say it's on delayed charging (charge timer), three times to say that the delayed charging timer likely won't be long enough to fully charge the battery. Dare to unplug while the Volt is locked and it sets off the "charge cord alarm" otherwise known as the car alarm.

    Other cars are completely, blissfully, silent in all these circumstances. The charge cord alarm can be disabled by the dealer for 2011 cars (I had my Volt neutered) and for 2012 and later it can be done in the car using the center console configuration screen but it is armed by default and many owners don't turn it off.

    That causes problems when a Volt is at a public charging location and the owner fails to unplug (and move) the car when it is done charging thereby blocking others from charging their own cars. At least with the LEAF and PiP you can unplug the charging station cord from the car and repurpose it without risk of setting of the damn car alarm.

    The charge status tooting cannot be disabled, as far as I know. At a minimum, it should be made configurable like the charge cord alarm.

    I know many Prius owners have been annoyed over the years by the beeping while backing up in reverse "gear". I noticed that "my" PiP isn't doing that. Is that a configurable behavior now or did Toyota finally agree to stop doing that by default?

    I disabled it myself via the Scan Gauge. Otherwise the dealership has to do it.

    Unlike some other cars (like my 2004 Prius), the Volt navigation system only asks me to acknowledge the page of legalisms once every full moon or so.

    My Prius bothered me to do that every time I started the car and tried to use the GPS maps. Every single time. Grrr.

    I'm not sure where those numbers are coming from. Please re-read.

    I said that I've charged with Charepoint over 117 times and 25 of those times it was from 0.0 miles remaining -- i.e. a fully discharged (as much as the PIP allows). The 0.3 was "today's" miles remaining...i.e. I had 0.3 miles out of 13.1 on this morning's charge before I plugged in to the Chargepoint.


    I'm not sure where this is coming from or what it is replying to.

    It came from a posting by usbseawolf2000 above who said the EPA numbers for the PiP were 3.2 kWh & 0.3 miles to go 25 miles. And you had asked how they got a full 3.2 kWh when you only seem to be able to put about 2.7 kWh total into the PiP. Or at least that's how I interpreted the question.

    I was unable to get a charge at all today at work, and no charge at all on the way home. This is not uncommon for me given the charging situation at work. The end of the day stats ended up like so:

    36 EV miles, 61.6 gas miles, 97.5 miles total driven. 1.88 gallons used for an overall average of 52 MPG.
