I will have to look at the recall letter. Something about the splines on the steering rod.

Question: Sears came back at $75 a tire installed and calibrated. They said they would reprogram so the new sensors would be recognized by the cars ECU.
I called the JAP shop (reputable indy shop in south FL) and using only genuine Toyota parts, they quoted $103 for the sensor, $80 to recalibrate, plus $25 per tire to dismount and remount.

My question is, are the aftermarket sensors decent enough to last a few years? Have you (or anyone) used aftermarket with success?

I would just replace the one sensor for now and keep your fingers crossed.

Price around - Call Belle Tire, Discount Tire, Firestone. $70 a tire is way too much. I just paid $50 per tire for customizable ID TPMS sensors at an Independent local tire shop (not a chain store) Sears is high in their price.

FYI - the Gen III's factory service manual states that the TPMS battery life is 10 years. I am not sure if this also applies to the Gen II, but I would only replace 1 sensor.

I agree makes sense to replace one. I'm going to try Firestone to see if cost is lower than Sears. I'll report back with results.
    Thanks!

Replacing one turned into two after (oddly) another sensor died within a week after the first. Sears replaced the sensors with replacements (non-OEM) and the light is off. Total $150 installed in south Florida.

Btw Firestone wanted to use genuine sensors only, and they wanted to charge $85 just to recalibrate after install. Their estimate for one wheel was over $200. Needless to say, went back to Sears where they charged $70 for replacements sensor and $3 per tire for labor/diagnostics/calibration. Just throwing out prices to give people some ball park figures when they come across this issue.
