I test drove the Prius c today and love it!

I am getting close to taking the plunge but wanted to get some opinions on the options/accessories I should get.

Some information about me- I live in New York City and so would be using the car for city driving, mostly just on the weekends. I will also be parking it on the street alot.

    Do I need:

    carpet vs. all-weather floor mats

    cargo mat vs. cargo tray

    rear bumper protector

body side moldings (How effective are they at protecting dings?)

wheel locks (Do prius tires really get stolen or does a wheel lock just make it that much harder to change a tire...)

paint protection film ( to minimize the scratches from my on street parking)

    I definitely want:

    a cargo net

    security system

Any advice would be much appreciated:)

I just got my first Gen2 Prius and really love her. I am finding that a good GPS, improved radio and something to keep vegan snacks in from falling on the non-leather seats are all good ideas. Dante my standard poodle dog likes the back seat and his paws don't leave any prints. The displays show up fine when I am wearing my Ray Ban (polarized) sunglasses (I work in the film industry) but I don't know about cheaper plastic glasses. I'm confused about how to save gas from the videos online but they seem to work for some people. All in all, the Prius is definitely improving my outlook on life and I am even walking more because the car is making me optimistic. Jeffrey

Nypriusc, I've never lived in NYC, but having been there and seeing how people treat theirs and other people's car with disregard, I'm not sure I would invest in a new car. What is your current vehicle and how has your ownership experience been so far? BTW, I've seen the length's people go to - putting on "barriers" on the front, back, and sides to hopefully protect against "bumper car" parking in the city. LOL! Do they work?

Addendum: I used to live at Lexington and 3rd on the east side across from Bloomingdale's. Didn't do much for my wardrobe but I discovered a car in NYC is still a good investment if you have comprehensive Loss-Damage protection and all other insurances.

We got our Prius C a few months ago and the one they had on the lot had the following installed:
    - Carpet floor mats
    - rear bumper protector
    - body side molding
    - clear bra (just on the hood)

Floor mats are a necessity. I have driven cars with the all weather floor mats and I have hated it every time since they are pretty slippery when they get just a little damp and the grooves in them make your feet fall asleep. I love the carpet ones though.

The rear bumper protector (which is just a black plastic thing) is pointless unless you are constantly getting stuff out of the boot and don't pay attention enough to lift it over the bumper. If it was the clear vinyl stuff it would be a lot better but the black one is ugly.

The body side molding is ugly. We have an orange one and the color doesn't really match from a lot of angles. If it was my car (my wife chose it) I would have had them take it off. I have had other cars with this molding on the side and if someone does open their door into you it will just chip the paint on the molding which looks just as bad as a chip on the actual door. So the only thing it is really good for is protecting the actual door skin from getting dented.

Clear bra, I love the clear bra and think it is totally necessary if you want your car to stay looking new. I just wish it would have had the whole bumper done as well. I guess just having the hood done is better than nothing though.

We ended up getting the C3 and my biggest grip about it is the navigation system. I absolutely hate the fact that you can't program it while the car is in motion. I know it is to make it so the driver doesn't do it while driving but everytime we have wanted to use it, we are together and the passenger is the one trying to program it. We end up just using our cell phones because it is SOOOOO much faster and easier than pulling over so the navigation was a complete waste.

I bought mine with zero accessories and then got what I wanted through EBay for far less. For instance, door edge guards were $119 through the dealer. I got an oem set through a dealer in CA for $10.95 and installed them myself. Likewise, I got the all-weather mats, including the cargo mat for $84 instead of $200. I also got the cargo organizer because I've stored a lot of stuff there (warning triangle, first aid kit, tool kit, flashlight, duct tape, etc) and didn't want it sliding around. The oem cargo organizer is flimsy and not worth the list price of $49. I was lucky to find one for far less. I keep a microfiber cloth up front which is great for removing those marks which the dash loves to accumulate.
