I noticed some "pink residue" while changing my oil this evening. Is this a coolant leak? I'm not sure what parts are pictured, but I'm guessing that is the water pump area since the pink residue is also inside a pulley.

I currently have 85K miles on my 2008 and purchased the extended warranty which pushes it out to 100K. QUESTION: If it is a coolant leak would this be covered under the extended "Platinum" warranty I purchased?

It wasn't an aftermarket warranty. I purchased the extended warranty from the Toyota dealer the day I bought my car.

What is leaking? The inverter coolant pump or actual engine coolant pump?

Well Jimbopalmer would know much more than myself about the warranties. Im a newbie around here myself :D but I'd think and hope that the Toyota extended warranty would cover it. Do you have a deductible?

No deductible. I'm looking at the paper right now. It says "Toyota Extra Care Vehicle Service Agreement" PLAN Code: BB7, 6 years, 100,000 miles.

The Effective Date was 3/30/2008, so I'm within that.

Then Im sure they'd cover it then, especially if its the platinum level.

I would think so. I just got done reading the "Coverage & Exclusions" and Water Pump (doesn't say what type of pump) is included as are all "Seals and Gaskets". I paid $900 for the Platinum Level when I bought the car new in 2008. This is the first "problem" I've ever had with it. I still haven't had a Check Engine light ever come on in the 85K miles.

I've read both the engine loop and inverter loop share the same pink Toyota Super Long Life Coolant. I have an appointment to get the leak inspected. If the dealer mechanic determins that the pump needs replaced, would all the pink SLLC be replaced?

I'm also going to to have the Inverter Water Pump and Steering Shaft Recall done at the same time. When they take the Inverter Water Pump out, would that also call for the replacement of the SLLC?

Toyota list the coolant in the parts to be replaced in there recall instructions to the dealer.

Some dealers just clamp the hoses to the pump and change just the pump only topping off the coolant.

I would ask them to change the coolant while they are replacing the pump in a by the way fashion. They should then say it will be changed anyway FOC with the pump. If they present you with a bill for this when the work is done point out that this is being paid for by Toyota.

By all means get it covered under warranty if possible. This is a common prob. In my case I did not have warranty but the leak seemed to stop, so now I have almost 120k on the orig pump.

Which pump are you refering to....the Engine or Inverter Pump? Even if draining the coolant system isn't called for in the recall (I'm not sure if it is or isn't) they should replace ALL the coolant free of charge?

In the recall for the inverter pump Toyota call for the fluid to be changed. I would also expect the dealer to change the engine coolant as a matter of course if they are changing the engine coolant pump as obviously the pump is failing and there could be particles in the system from the old pump to damage the seal of the new pump.

So, even though the Inverter and Engine both use the same pink SLLC, they are two separate systems and each require their own drain/fill?

Yes that is correct, the systems use the same type of fluids, but are totally independent of each other.

If the Engine Water Pump ends up needing to be replaced (covered 100% by my warranty), would my warranty also cover the gallons of SLLC that needs to be replaced? I noticed in my Service Agreement fluids are not covered, only parts....but in my case the part and fluid are related to eachother.

Difficult for me to say being in the UK but I would ask if they are going to change the fluid without mentioning the guaranty if they say no try pushing it. If the answer is still no I would pay for new fluid now with no labor charge because, (1) it is better for the pump to run in new fluid, (2) The fluid will soon be due to be changed anyway and you will then end up paying for fluid and labor. This is for the engine pump. If the inverter pump is being changed under the recall do as I say in my previous post.
