A year ago, a few minutes ago, I lost my mom to cancer (she had no cancer after her RAV4 was totaled on my birthday in September 2011 by a distracted driver but by December where the seatbelt held her tight, something nasty had started and finished her on January 26, 2012 at 4:11PM).

Mom loved the Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos and always played the penny slots (her name was Penny so it was appropriate) and in tribute to her, my siblings and I decided to go to Foxwoods today to make a "deposit" and I volunteered to drive, not realizing we had snow and ice outside.

My Prius was a rockstar today in her all weather tires - no spin, no warning lights of "Omigawd, I have no traction" over hills and tight turns. I was surprised and pleased how well the car held the road with hills, tight turns and conditions of snow and ice covered roads (1-3" and that is outside my comfort zone without four wheel drive).

Too cold to wash the resulting salt off today and am hoping we get above freezing tomorrow as it was killing me to put her in the garage with salt on her...even with her Simoniz glass coating...

A plus - my brother and I ended up winning at the slots.... and we helped my sister to try to up her ante as well.

That sounds like a nice family outing in memory of your mom.

It was... my brother took the back seat and said the ride was good... we later went on to my favorite beach to get some pics and one astonishingly stopped traffic... will try to find it....

Nice pic. I probably would have lost my balance and fallen off the sign right as he snapped the shutter.

Did your skid control light ever flashed for TRAC, VSC, or ABS?

I have found my Prius to be very sure footed, despite my effort trying to "test" that VSC, I never could spin it out and engage the VSC.

Then again I have 215mm tires and no such thing as ice or snow in my neck of woods. :p So salt is only applied to tortilla chips instead of the road.

Or salted margaritas, on very rare occasions!

I let the car do her thing on the road...and have to say I was pleased and surprised! These are the roads to the side of the deer laden, windy main road, which were narrow, hilly, windy, deer laden and snow/ice covered.

Guess my Prius might be getting salted and dirty a wee bit more often....;)

Thanks - Mom would have liked my unabashed ability to sit on this sign as she knew this beach was the one thing that kept me going when times were tough.

Dad is still here, in OR with the love of his life (and I could not be happier for him and his new friend) - he will be visiting in May and I cannot wait! He's going to be seeing green by the time his visit ends...;)

There is a huge Adirondack chair I sat in for a picture that represents a fundraiser to help the businesses on this beach and after I had three pics snapped folks were lining up behind my Prius to get their chance to enjoy the sunshine! We counted four Prii venturing around the beach on our way out.

I am not as agile as I once was but once I was seated on the sign, my brother was laughing as he took the picture as traffic was stopping to watch. Everyone should have a magic place like this that makes them glad to be alive.

No warning lights other than the initial one when the tires first hit the snow/ice in the driveway... the "slippery road" yellow light (translation: WTH!!!! I was minding my own business in the garage and now, wait, you want me to do what?! I don't go in snow! Ice? Really?!!! Omigawd! Are you serious?!!) but she had no choice but to get in gear and take us on our way!

I was pleasantly surprised. My siblings loved their turn with the heated Softex front seat and even in the backseat they each said there was enough room.

What tires came on yours, OceanEyes?

My '12 came with Yokohama Avid S33's and they terrified me twice last week with just an inch of snow! I've travelled for 23 years in all kinds of weather, ice, deep snow, etc and have never been worried, never wrecked or got stuck, but they all had tires of my choosing. The car did great on the highway going straight but side streets and hills, forget it. I did find after messing around, that the B setting helped avoid using the brake, just like downshifting. Once I mastered the shifting (still used to normal trannies). It became a little better.
I am confident that with better rubber, it will definitely be a champ though.

Glad to hear your doing well with yours.

Sorry to hear about your mother.

Your story about the Prius doing well in ice and snow gives me some confidence for our trip later this month.

I grew up in Florida and have never driven on snow. Now my wife and I live in SoCal and we're headed to Big Bear Lake for Valentine's day.

I ordered some $150 Thule "super premium" snow chains.

Was that overkill if my all season tires are good?

I probably won't even get to use them. :)

My dad lived in Three Rivers, CA and took me on the Sequoia road in a van... his former in-laws warned him about taking me on the Mineral King road- I would have died an embarrassing death a la Bob Bryson in A Walk in the Woods (had he met a bear). Dad laughed and called the Sequoia road "Butt Pucker Ridge." I am glad I did not experience Mineral King as I would not be posting here right now. Good Gawd! Let me know when someone has the brass to take a Prius to Mineral King...

Ice this AM and no slippage. A friend commented in a text that he is seeing more Prii parked at Bristol Mt (my old neighborhood in upstate NY)... I was careful driving today but the baby has earned a bath tomorrow after getting salted...

Thanks for sharing. I can attest that the Prius handles in the ice and snow as well as any other front wheel drive car with similar ground clearance. Being smack dab in the geographic center of Canada has given me many years of experience.

What kind of tires do you guys have? Are you running all seasons?

I've driven through snow and ice in NJ, PA and the mid Atlantic since 1987, starting in RWD v8 cars and have never had a problem or gotten stuck but I feel like this car refuses to do anything that isn't driving straight! I've been more careful in it but slid though intersections in 1" of snow. Went down a small slope in a parking lot and almost slid into a fence at 5 mph! Sleet and ice, forget it, no way. I do believe the car should be good but cannot figure why it so Not, maybe just need snow tires for the first time ever.

Ugh. I'm sure nobody will believe me but really, I don't think it's me ;-) I once drove a small Saturn from North Jersey to Atlantic City in a snow that just about shut down the state but I can't ride a Prius through a snow shower!

Sounds like a wonderful tribute trip.

    ------------------

I'm glad you had good luck, but there is no way (in my opinion) the LLR all-seasons that come with the Prius are a good winter tire if you are seeing snow and ice regularly for months on end as I do in VT. Mine turned hard as a rock below about 45 degrees and the very shallow grooves make for bad snow biting.

However, with snow tires, I've found the Prius to be every bit as good a winter car as any other front wheel drive car I've ever owned. Ultimately, ground clearance is it's real limitation.

You might know this, but that yellow light is telling you when traction control is intervening. Even with snow tires, I still see it occasionally, usually pulling away from stops when the roads are a mess.Since the Prii's traction control cannot be turned off, it doesn't let you have any "fun" in snowy parking lots either. :( :p
