Quick history: I traded my 2009 Honda Civic Si for a 2012 PiP. Since then, my wife wanted a Prius. Not the plugin though because she didn't want to bother plugging in ect. The problem is, we just bought her a 2012 Hyundai Elantra Limited with tech package a year ago. It currently has 12k miles. We tried trading it for a brand new Prius but obviously, we would take a major hit. In the upwards around 6k. Not quickly giving up, I searched and found a 2010 Prius 2 priced 16k with 53k miles. I got the dealer to agree to do a full trade. Sounds like a good deal? My wife is worried about not having her in dash navi/back up camera. Would I be able to install an OEM version head unit (find one used) or would aftermarket be the only option?

Here are some pictures for reference.

Use a good Garmin for NAV! The BU camera is nice but not essential, we have 2 Prius, my wife has a 12 without a BU camera, I have a 13 with a camera. Not a really big deal, nice but unnecessary.

I'd keep the Elantra for the time being, giving you more time for a better deal. The Elantra is a good looking vehicle, but as you state the fuel mileage is bad. While you're plugging your PIP in, offer to plug her's in. That's the way to go.

We bought a Prius 3 in November, and one reason we wanted a 3 was for the backup camera. We were just talking the other day about how neither one of us uses it - we still both turn around and look (not easy, but still doable). But we don't parallel park. If your wife does a lot of parallel parking then the camera is probably handy. For "normal" backing up, the camera is not necessary, as long as she can physically turn around to look.

Wow, leather(ette?) seats in Elantra, nice. Interior looks a lot more sexed up than Prius. Couple options -

Keep the Elantra for 3 years and get 2016, 4th Gen Prius liftback
Keep Elantra for 5 years and get 2018, 4th Gen Prius liftback with mid-cycle refresh

If she must get a Prius now, keep cost down to have more for next Gen Prius which (I hope) will blow this current one away. Then get the 2018 model late in the year.

Just curious how did you do trading in your 2009 Honda civic? Break even?

The 2010 Prius is pre-wired for backup camera -- easy install
Nav will have to be 3rd party.

You could try and sell the Hyundai privately. If successful you would have a lot more Prius choices.

How many miles does she drive each year? I'm not sure the Prius would save much unless she drives a lot of miles each year. The upper end Elantra is a nicer car than the Prius Two. I'd just keep it rather than take a big hit or drop down to an older car.

Sounds like the wife simply *likes* the Prius; I doubt $ savings has anything to do with it.

The 2010 Prius 2 (II) is not prewired for backup camera. The Level 3 (III) ???

Then I stand corrected. Sorry for posting wrong information, I was under the impression that since 2006 or so they all had wiring.

Wish they had. Would have saved a little work. Can't speak for Level III and higher. Sorry for the interruption.

Thanks everyone for your comments. Most made sense (financially) but as we all know, that's not the only thing in the equation.

We ended up trading it for a used 2012 Prius C - trim 4 (Toyota Certified) with 22k miles! So she won't be loosing most of the features she has on the Elantra. Got them to give me 16.5k for the Elantra and got the C for $21.5k. Put 2k down and got 1.99 apr.

Got 15k for the Civic Si.
