As some of you know I recently traded in my 2012 Three with high miles for a 2012 PIP Advanced. I wouldn't have done such a thing but the price was great and they offered me a fantastic price for my trade. The salesman, Harlan Sacks, and the sales manager, Andy Guerrero, really took care of me. They knew about PriusChat.com after working with Danny to become listed as a preferred dealer during the PIP rollout. I had suggested they be listed as a preferred dealer after many service visits in which they correctly quoted me service prices which ALL of the other dealers in the area screwed up. The other guys were trying to charge me $300 for a transaxle change and argued with me when I told them to check the service book.

Anyway, I pushed the PIP as a dealer car so it's mostly new but it had terrible hard water spots on the windows. I came back a week later to ask if they could remove the spots for me. The agreed but when I asked the technician how he planned on doing it he told me he would use steel wool. This set off an alarm in my head. I had used steel wool on previous cars and it always left small scratches and a spiderweb-like haze. He reassured me that this wouldn't happen.

The car came back 30min later and sure enough. Scratches and haze. :(

I went back a week later to inquire about fixing the problem. The service department was very respectful when they learned that my complaint was caused by one of their techs. I tried my best not to get the kid in trouble. He was very helpful despite the windows being ruined. The service department was eager to get things fixed so I dropped off my car today for a new windshield and possibly side windows.

My point in writing this? To share some frustration but also to praise the excellent service from this dealer. One little screw up and everyone there is bending over backwards to make things right. (y)

    I'll keep you posted.

Sorry to hear about that--hopefully the dealer makes it right.

For future reference, I had water spots on the windows of a previous car, and I had great results with Griot's Garage fine glass polish:

Sorry I didn't keep up with the last thread, but I thought you were gonna return the PIP and get the III back? Is your gal still around?

Does Harlan go by the nickname "Fish"? If so he's the one I bought my GenIII from. Good guy and one of only two car salesmen I have ever recommended to other people.

I may try that on the other windows. They mainly have the spiderweb appearance so the scratches are very small.

I couldn't dissolve the contract easily because of all the deals we made so I kept it. Not the best financial choice but the dealer didn't make much either so it's not like I got taken. In the end we both made out. :)

My girlfriend is still letting ME be around. lol

If they truly replace the glass, that's an outstanding dealership. If they send it to a glass shop it have it polished out, they are a good dealership.

    Trust but verify. :)

Aye, it was Fish. He's a good guy for sure. :)

I now keep two sets of "Prius Purchasing Info" in my car. One set for NorCal dealer (Magnussen and Harlan) and one set for SoCal with Dianne.

I asked to see the part numbers for the replacement glass. :)

Honestly, if they were able to polish it out I would be even happier. I don't like the thought of removing the original sealant but whatever it takes to provide me with clear windows.

Either way, they didn't even balk at fixing the problem. They kept stating their number one goal is to make sure I am happy with the car. :)

And that's exactly where I was going to go with this. After the "no washing" break in time frame, take it to a car wash and give it your best torture test, crawl underneath the dash with a powerful flashlight and check for leaks. A day or two later, pull back the carpet and insulation in the upper footwells and check for any moisture particularly in outside corners.

    GOOD LUCK!

Little off topic, but so it's known, water spots can also etch into the paint, heard them called 'type 2' water spots as recall. This happened in Sausalito when a car passed me in a flooded driveway splashing the left side of my 2009. I noticed white water spots starting to dry in the sun. If you see that, get a gallon or two of water and rinse right away, don't hop on a sailboat like I did. I polished and all, but they didn't come out. Fortunately they could only be seen from certain and were tough to see, but were there.

Did they replace it with a Toyota glass or just a replacement glass which is much cheaper?

I am surprised the kid did not use a "Belt Sander" to get the job done in half the time!
This has to be the STUPIDIST thing I have ever heard of.!
Justin, those bells you heard were warning alarms as the kid explained the process! Listen to your inner self!
Even if he used number "0000" Steel Wool, you NEVER use steel wool on glass!
I would hope you get a real OEM replacement, not a flimsey OEM wanna be!!!

If that would have happened to my car, I would have given the kid a haircut, using "0" Steel Wool.
It would be a haircut he would never forget!
    Just simply SAD!

Yeah, everyone knows you should used a D/A sander on glass:D

0000 with glass polish or other lube is a common and effective glass detailing method. Chances are the kid in question used a coarser steel wool or used it dry.

I agree. Plus why put a windshield into the recycle bin if you can just polish the few bad spots. It isn't like the glass was cracked or water was leaking in.

I have never heard of using steel wool on glass! Body, bumper, wheels, sure, with lube of course, I will agree with that use. I have never had anything so stuck on a windshield that it could not be removed using only some sort of wetting agent, time, and a fingernail. A new razor blade at a very shallow angle, I have heard of, but I would be careful with that idea!
All this over a stubborn water spot, probably high in mineral content, stuck on a windshield! WOW! :(

Do a web search for Chemical Guys Water Spot Remover. It's about $18 a bottle. You just spread it on and let it sit for a few minutes and then rinse heavily with water. I used it on my friend's Porsche and my daughter's Honda. Both on the paint and on the glass. Dissolves the spots with no damage to the car. Great stuff.
