Back at the dealer but Magnussen's Toyota is treating me well

Sorry to hear about that--hopefully the dealer makes it right.

For future reference, I had water spots on the windows of a previous car, and I had great results with Griot's Garage fine glass polish:

Sorry I didn't keep up with the last thread, but I thought you were gonna return the PIP and get the III back? Is your gal still around?

 

Does Harlan go by the nickname "Fish"? If so he's the one I bought my GenIII from. Good guy and one of only two car salesmen I have ever recommended to other people.

 

If they truly replace the glass, that's an outstanding dealership. If they send it to a glass shop it have it polished out, they are a good dealership.

Trust but verify.

And that's exactly where I was going to go with this. After the "no washing" break in time frame, take it to a car wash and give it your best torture test, crawl underneath the dash with a powerful flashlight and check for leaks. A day or two later, pull back the carpet and insulation in the upper footwells and check for any moisture particularly in outside corners.

Little off topic, but so it's known, water spots can also etch into the paint, heard them called 'type 2' water spots as recall. This happened in Sausalito when a car passed me in a flooded driveway splashing the left side of my 2009. I noticed white water spots starting to dry in the sun. If you see that, get a gallon or two of water and rinse right away, don't hop on a sailboat like I did. I polished and all, but they didn't come out. Fortunately they could only be seen from certain and were tough to see, but were there.

 

Did they replace it with a Toyota glass or just a replacement glass which is much cheaper?

 

I am surprised the kid did not use a "Belt Sander" to get the job done in half the time!

Even if he used number "0000" Steel Wool, you NEVER use steel wool on glass!
I would hope you get a real OEM replacement, not a flimsey OEM wanna be!!!

If that would have happened to my car, I would have given the kid a haircut, using "0" Steel Wool.
It would be a haircut he would never forget!

Yeah, everyone knows you should used a D/A sander on glass

0000 with glass polish or other lube is a common and effective glass detailing method. Chances are the kid in question used a coarser steel wool or used it dry.

 

I agree. Plus why put a windshield into the recycle bin if you can just polish the few bad spots. It isn't like the glass was cracked or water was leaking in.

I have never heard of using steel wool on glass! Body, bumper, wheels, sure, with lube of course, I will agree with that use. I have never had anything so stuck on a windshield that it could not be removed using only some sort of wetting agent, time, and a fingernail. A new razor blade at a very shallow angle, I have heard of, but I would be careful with that idea!
All this over a stubborn water spot, probably high in mineral content, stuck on a windshield! WOW!

 

Do a web search for Chemical Guys Water Spot Remover. It's about $18 a bottle. You just spread it on and let it sit for a few minutes and then rinse heavily with water. I used it on my friend's Porsche and my daughter's Honda. Both on the paint and on the glass. Dissolves the spots with no damage to the car. Great stuff.
