i'm at 7,000 and haven't done anything. i'll probably go to the dealer at 10k for the freebie. i'm still getting the stupid message too, and haven't bothered to look up how to shut it off.

It took them 4 hours to do this "non-service" to my PiP. Still, I can't argue with free. Tire rotations are very important and often forgotten. It's not worth 4 hours but they also disabled that lousy backup beep. If anything, these service intervals will be used to maintain warranty. Should you have a warranty claim, it will be hard to argue that one of these inspections could've prevented the problem and you neglected to do it when it was offered for free.

I plan to skip all the 5k intervals after the first 3 free ones.

My dealer told me that my 5000K check will include an oil change. The motor is pretty much broken in now and the first oil change will remove any "impurities" from that first oil used. At least that's what I was told.

 

1) as others have mentioned, you need to do it for warranty purposes.
2) the tire tread wear warranty requires documented 5K tire rotations.
3) I'm paying for an oil change at 5K anyway. I saw some of the oil coming out of Prii at 10k (admittedly not Plugins) and that oil was BLACK! (My parts counter was 10 feet from the Quicklube Rack)
4) it's free.

 

It is good to have on the permanent service record that the service was completed on time if you ever plan on selling the car private party. Also many dealers you can schedule a Saturday service. You can also ask a friend to help you out and bring the car in or give you a ride to work or use shuttle service free to get to work and back the dealer provides or schedule the car for service and rent a dealer loaner car like a Yaris which is reasonable.

 

I went to the dealer for the 5k service, and when I learned they were not going to change the oil I drove away. I figure that if I consider the 'service' a ripoff if I pay, I'm not going to give the dealership the opportunity to ripoff Toyota.

I was told the 'service' includes an inspection and tyre rotation. The tyres will be fine to rotate at 10k, so as far as I am concerned the 'service' value is ZERO.

 

If you have the free service for 25 thousand miles, just go in and let them do their thing, so there is no worry about the warranty, when you are past the warranty period, that's another story.

 

I let them do the inspection part of the 5K service, but rotated the tires myself for a couple of reasons. The guys who do rotations seem to be on the low end of the training/pay ladder, and hammer the lug nuts too tight so that getting them off in case of a flat is difficult with the short lug wrench provided. They aren't particularly careful, so wheels can get scratched. I also had the service writer put on the ticket, "Do not adjust tire pressure." Fussy? Picky? Who, me? But I wrote my copy of the ticket that I had rotated the tires, so I'm in compliance with the terms of the warranty.

 

I'll be damn if some low end service person is going to use an impact on my lugs or get their greasy paws on my Plus wheels. I put 1200 miles on my car last season and it will get it's oil changed, with Mobil 1 and the OEM filter I bought, this spring before I take it out of storage.

I keep getting cards in the mail reminding me that my 5k mile service is past due

I had an old Honda Civic I had the dealer change the oil every 3,000 miles. They had to replace the oil pan from a stripped socket.

 

technically you have everything you need in the car under the driver seat.

 

WEOH, I got to agree with you. I have all these recalls on my Prius and I will not take it to a dealer because I don't trust any of them. If my car needs one of these recall parts I will have my nephew get the part and have him install it, that way I know it was done right.
