I listened to CNBC and they interviewed another reporter. The Tesla stock took a 2.25% hit today from the article. His opinion is this NY Times reporter was derelect in his duties and just tried to drive the car to the maximum. All EV drivers understand how to drive within an acceptable range and get juice long before it's needed. This NY Times reporter ignored many warnings to get energy, and pushed the car beyond the limit. The car's maximum range was 300 miles and this guy drove it above that. Only a fool would do that or a Reporter who is looking for headlines and instant fame.

Well, unfortunately, the only thing most will see is the original article. The first to print or report wins. Rebuttals don't get much press.

Anyone who owns a EV knows that "range" is impacted by many factors including weather, hills, accessories, if you had a full change the night before and much more. If this NY Times reporter evaluated a gasoline powered car and ran out of gas would he blame the car manufacturer? This guys problem is he did not drive with common sense and pointed a finger at Tesla.

The sad part is Tesla is an American company that engineers and manufactures cars in the USA. This is our contries future and the start of cleaning our planet from pollution created by Transportation. Do we want this silly Journalist to point a false finger at our future. This is a sad day.

The editor should have him retract the article or give Tesla a chance to respond.

Yep. Politicians have known this for a long time and it works in politics just as well as it works in the press.

as mentioned, Toyota is betting on hydrogen fuel cells. I think I'll skip the EV cars (range limitations, too long to charge, battery degradation, plus my garage does not have outlets) and wait for the hydrogen fuel cell cars to come to production.

    Toyota Green Innovation

EV is a good second commuter car. it won't replace the conventional car. hydrogen cars will.

Yes, first Honda and GM were the hydrogen companies. They said hydrogen would be here soon, so no reason to really invest in hybrids, just the minimum. That seemed to be Toyota's new line - ev city cars and fuel cell long range - until the summer of 2010. Then it seemed to start understanding city cars might not really be it, and fuel cells may never be profitable, and made an investment in Tesla.

Since then they have released the tesla partnered rav4 bev - in less than 3 years from talks to production. They have downgraded there own bev city car from production to test, but haven't said so in so many words. Rumors are they have greatly increased R&D in phevs and we should see the fruits of that in a couple of years. Meanwhile..... imagine giving a reporter in NYC a fuel cell car. Do you follow him with a hydrogen truck?

Perhaps GM in it's engineering with the EV-40 and Toyota with it's EV-10 resolved the issue of the bungling reporter who does not have the common sense G-D gave a child.

EV cars are good second cars. Hydrogen fuel cell cars have the potential to be a no-fuss replacement for the conventional car. EVs do not and are not ready for prime time or mass market adoption. Hyundai is gearing up for consumer production of Hydrogen cars by 2015. I'll wait and re-evaluate when I see hydrogen cars hit the streets, in the meantime I'll enjoy my Prius.

Could you define "second car" for me?
You see, we drive our EV more miles each year than our other car.
The EV is almost always the first car taken out of the garage.
The EV is driven more often than the other car.

    Just wondering...

Yeah right... seems like wishful thinking. From the article you posted:
FWIW, I drove a couple FCVs (+ other vehicles, including some EVs) down in So Cal last year at Alt Car Expo. At least one of the reps mentioned to me the reason why they're not more widely rolled out is due to lack of infrastructure.

my first purchase is going to be a car I use in all instances.. cross country.. LA to Napa etc. ie Prius.

for my second car (if I was going to get one) I could see myself going for an EV... but only as a second car. it's useful in limited instances (i have done many cross country trips and longer rides than most) EV is not ever going to be a primary vehicle and I would gather more of a second car for commutes and such.

possibly but for a vast majority of Americans.. EV is not an option. it's where you bet on the infrastructure change.. I would rather bet on infrastructure change happening with ie hydrogen refueling stations rather than relying on retrofitting existing buildings and apt complexes for EV.

at the end of the day... EV ain't going to cut it in my estimation.

and I would also bet you, EV is not your only car which gets to my point about its limitations.

I'm not feeling like I want to collect cars like suits. Just saying.
