Personally I think that the jolt caused a bad connection onto one of the battery modules or a sensor wire. The resulting confusing signals may have triggered the battery fan to come on at high speed.

I just can't think of anything else that would explain the simultaneous sound described. For a short circuit or arcing to make enough noise to be heard in the cabin it would surely cause major damage and disable the car very quickly.

This is one of those occasions I would love to get my hands on the car to sort it out. Peoples description of noises can vary so much but as I said in a previous post there has to be something more to this than a module failing suddenly on it's own when the car strikes a rock.

I took it to shop #2 this morning. They had it for 3 hours and called and said the HV battery needs replaced. The noise was the fan running in the back. They didn't see any damage to the underside of the car, so there's no way to have insurance cover it (since no visible damage). They haven't opened up the battery compartment. They are going to call me on Monday with a quote once the mechanic gets ahold of an aftermarket guy to see how much the battery will cost since getting directly from Toyota is pricey. Not sure how much that will save me. Looks like this is out of pocket.

I have no idea how to prove that the bump/rock loosened anything to get insurance to cover it. Has anyone had anything similar happen with success?

Wonderful! I've left a message for them. I wonder if it is safe to drive that far in my car, or if the car would make it.

Hi Caiged. Have you determined if the problem was transient or if it has persisted? For example, does the fan continue to run? Are you getting normal or abnormal SOC (state of charge bars) displayed?

If some or all of the symptoms appear to have only been transient (from the large bump), then I think you should try removing the +ive terminal from the 12V battery for 15 minutes to reset the ECU's and codes, then see if they return. There still might be an underlying issue that eventually needs to be addressed (eg a less than perfect connection somewhere), but at least clearing the ECUs/codes and seeing if they return will give you some extra diagnostic information.

Cells 12 & 14 are bad. They checked the connections and those were fine. I have no idea how it all happened simultaneously, but everyone is saying that it had nothing to do with the jolt.

$2600 for battery if they get it from the dealer. Not sure how much aftermarket. Waiting on Monday to get here to find out.

When I drove to the shop this morning, the rear fan continued to run. The new shop is only 3-4 miles away, so I didn't have enough time to really see if anything odd was going on with the SOC. It started up with 3 bars, then went to 5 in that time in slightly hilly terrain. I'm not sure if the shop cleared the codes out today or not.
