i have a 2006 prius with 110k on it and a few days ago all the warning lights started coming on (check engine, vsc, red triangle, (!) ) this morning the car was completely dead so i replaced the 12v battery and it startedup fine and the lights all went away. i drove a few miles to work and the lights came back on and the rear ac will not shut off. it just keeps blowing full blast and the engine will not cut out at idle like it normally does. im assuming this is because it is trying to power that rear ac. has anyone else had a problem like this?

Rear AC? No such thing. I think you are hearing the battery cooling fan, which has it's intake at the passenger side back seat. It normally runs quietly, but one of the signs of potential HV battery failure is to hear this fan start running full blast, because a failed cell is giving off excess heat. 110K miles is a bit too soon for this to happen, however. There are DTC's set, so they need to be read by a Prius specific scanner and reported back here. The dealer will happily do this, for more than the cost of a scanner. Look on eBay for "mini VCI" if you are not in big hurry.

Also, please put your location into your profile to help with further advice.

The HV battery is overheating, causing the fan to run on high speed. There is a possibility that the fan is clogged up with hair, debris, etc. Many have gone in and cleaned it out to get improved air flow. Search for "clean battery fan" on this site for pictures. Otherwise, if it is OK, then you need to get the DTC's read and posted here so that good advice can be given.

Best of luck! I hope its the fan.

Also, where do you live? Can you update your profile for us please. It makes a difference because it seems the HV battery fails more often in hot southern climates.

If you are in a CARB state with the 10 year/150,000 mile warranty it is. Was the car bought new and registered in Florida? Because Fl. is a CARB warranty state; NC is not.

Are there any specialty hybrid shop near you? I googled "Prius repair north carolina" and found this place:
Hybrid Car Repair in Raleigh & Cary NC - Toyota Prius, Etc. | Tao Auto

You can also call this place, they might know of a place close to you other than the dealer$hip that specializes in Prius: autobeyours salvage and rebuildable cars

Of course, if you ARE covered under a CARB warranty, I'd bring it to the dealer and let them work their magic. If not CARB warranty, check out those two places I listed.

This is apparently another data point, where a car in a hot climate has had premature battery problems. The Prius does not like getting parked in the sun.

Yeah, in my relatively short time here that is definitely something I have noticed. Suddenly, for once, there is something Im grateful to live in the midwest for now :D

Yep. No rear AC. And yep, up on the above battery fan and the symptoms. This has got to be one of the funniest titles I've seen in awhile. :)

Where'd that map come from? It doesn't look right to me. A bunch of states marked as CARB emissions states AFAIK aren't or have a goofy status.

I have an 06 and Florida is NOT listed as a CARB emissions state (aka not listed as being eligible for the CA emissions warranty) in 06 the warranty booklet. It's not even listed in the '13 Prius warranty booklet (http://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/document/omms/T-MMS-13Prius/pdf/2013_Toyota_Prius_WMG.pdf). Unfortunately, the 06 warranty booklet isn't online at Toyota Owners Official Web Site: Service Coupons, Owner's Manuals, Service Scheduling And More, for some reason.

If Florida is a CARB state, it got added after model year 06, making the OP SOL. The HV battery is bad, Toyota might be willing to replace it out of goodwill or pay for part of the repair as it's not that far past 8 years/100K miles.

The only CARB emission states listed besides CA in my 06 warranty booklet are CT, ME, MA, NH, NJ, NY, RI and VT. I do know a few other states got added later.

Yeah I chuckled at the 'rear a/c' too :D

And about the CARB map, I downloaded it a while back from god knows where for my own reference. I better check its credibility!

Edit: I took the map out of my other post.

Well since you are slightly over the 100k warranty mark, you have couple options:

1.) Have the dealership do the battery and ask for special consideration from Toyota since you are just slightly over the 100k mark. They sometimes have paid 25-50-75% of the bill. 1 year warranty.
    2.) Get a salvage battery from a junk yard ($300- $?). 30 day warranty.
3.) Buy a rebuilt battery from one of the few places that do it ($1400 or so). Warranty varies.
4.) Rebuild the battery yourself by replacing bad cells and rebalancing the pack. No warranty and sometimes iffy.

I thought there was a hybrid specialty shop down in North Carolina that specializes in Prius? I'd contact them too for options.

Im kinda new here but from what Ive it wont run on just gas for long. I think eventually it wont enter "Ready" mode once the computers determine that the traction battery is spent.
