Long day - started at 1:45AM EST and made it to the boat on time. Seas were 4-6 with some eight foot rollers - it was rocking the 114 feet of steel under our feet. Cold as well - had many layers under the foul weather gear and gloves... but the sun was out and it was a great day - 12 hours on the boat.

One fish caught during the whole trip (cod and tuna can be like that - either being caught left and right or not at all and the crew said this was a "dismal trip" with only one caught) and the pool won by my date - he said I was the "good luck charm."

Whatever you want to call it, it was a great day.:D

That is what my friend said. :D

Conditions were great for those who like the "motion of the ocean" and definitely not good for those that get cold or get seasick... we had a few folks on board that were nursing ginger ale and making trips to the front of the boat near the chum cage (which was on deck as we switched from anchoring to "doing a drift")! Upwind, nonetheless:confused: . I mentioned to the crew that standing near the fragrant chum cage was not the place to recover from the sequence of seasickness... that would be the coup de grace in the cycle!

My brother-in-law wants to go but when he heard cod fishing is "feast or famine" and we had a "famine" run, I think the idea of getting up to meet the boat before 3AM, freezing on the water and going home with an empty cooler was less appealing. I have to see if his interest level is still high for going as I am ready to go again.

Hoping my sister will come along as well... I was one of two ladies on board on my trip... one guy was giving me some **** as I had my sailing gear on ("So you're a sailor?" LOL) but I was definitely not "Fifty Shades of Green" as members of his group were as they were complaining that the boat did not "move like a regular boat" - it was "gyrating" in their observation, which made them feel "off"... as they watched me bolt to my fishing station ready to drop the bait as soon as the horn blasted.:D Felt like a big steel boat in rough water to me - there is no rhyme or reason to what the ocean does.;)

Plans made for next weekend to go hiking with probably meeting midweek for coffee.

And I found the cure to insomnia - go fishing for 12 hours on rough water!

Today's events include starting training in earnest for a 5K that my coworkers and students are doing April 7th... the PE teachers have everyone on a "Couch to 5K" plan and a run at one of the local land trust parks.

    Life is good.:)

    Wow that is yummy! Congrats.
Best eating fish is North Atlantic Cod. Fished-out species, subject of book COD, right?
In north NJ, Point Pleasant the boat Jamaica goes out for Cod trips, thought about it.
I need dramamine. But I was just dreaming, you did it. I am impressed.

I give you credit. That sounds like a tough trip.

Th 5K sounds like fun. If you can endure the fishing trip the 5K training should be a breeze.

So you running with NB or Nike?

This photo is left over from my twitter post, but using a good NB 1260v2 was able to increase my distance. I also keep a journal of workouts with imapmyrun and take photos. Been doing it for a few years now.

I recall contemplating a helicopter rescue from a salmon trip out of Westport, WA a long time ago.
    I turn green, I'm afraid.
    Good that you enjoyed it!

3.5 miles today in successful interval training. Running on crappy Reeboks that need to be replaced... the run I am registered for was normally run on my beach but moved due to Sandy destruction. My PE teachers encouraging my participation=honored!:D

Hot tub tonight followed by a shower and Absorbine horse liniment will alleviate me limping to work tomorrow ;) ...

No seasickness... a nasty, rough ocean is always a spiritually uplifting experience for me. Being one of two women on a boat of 40+ men and greeting every set at the rail ready to go... priceless!:D

Good shoes makes all the difference. Last year I was in the groove doing between 50-60 miles per month of road work. I was doing power walking and had a workout partner. Wednesday evenings and afterwards went out for Pizza and a pitcher of beers, than Saturday and Sunday mid mornings with either breakfast or lunch to follow. I had a pair of ASICS and New Balances. Both were $150 gel sneakers and very comfortable.

This winter slowing down to about half that with 5-6 miles per week just on weekends. I
When it gets warmer I'll pick up on Wednesdays and increase mileage.

The NB 1260v2 are great sneakers. Best I ever owned.

I do the Susan G Komen 5K every year. That is for a good cause

So Friday 1:45 AM (CST), I started driving from Huntsville AL to visit the Hirth engine dealer in Tiffin OH. I picked up my mechanic in Nashville an hour and half later on the way. We got there 1:30 PM (EST) and had a 3 hour talk on the Hirth 3502 engine with Matt and his mechanic. Then we drove back. I dropped Justin off in Nashville and paid him a bonus for his time and was home at 1:30 AM (CST), 1,180 miles later:
Here Matt is showing some of the radiator plumbing that comes with the engine.

    Lessons learned from the trip:
    • Justin and I discussed landing gear options including the parts and ground testing on the way up.
    • Matt showed us a Hirth 3502 and in the photo the extensive hardware that comes in the box.
    • We discussed propeller options including fixed pitch and two electronically adjustable.
    • An alternate engine orientation looks promising and may be the approach followed.
      • Inverting the engine puts the cylinders low in the coolant loop improving the margin if there is a leak or air bubble.
    • Fleshed out how to handle the engine mount and vibration dampers.
    • Identified a risk on how to mount the muffler and alternate routings.
      • Because the muffler plan is to extended it back, it still needs a mount support that minimizes the relative vibration between the engine and muffler.
    • Enough facts and data to complete the detailed design.
      1. Propeller and engine loading for 52" prop, 2350 rpm, 60 hp
      2. Muffler support that minimizes relative engine vibration issues
    • On the way back, we reviewed what we learned about the Hirth 3502 and discussed options.
    • Another view of fixed pitch prop versus electrically adjustable.
I had banked extra hours last week and it was 'use it or lose it.' We drove through scattered snow showers in 32-36F weather. Running 70-75 on the Interstate, we got mid-40s after burning off the E53 and considering the conditions, no problem. The car had a layer of road-grime and salt and Sunday to the car wash we did go.

Are you kidding me JMD, how cold can it be in Southern CA in winter? My rule on running as low as about 38F is OK to run. I am fairly avid 5K runner but gotta bum foot I am resting (plantars fasciatis or something). Getting too old I guess I am having to ride bike more often, where 50F is my rule there. Not going to run until I get some new shoes.

Hey my trainer is kicking my can all over the place. I'm by the ocean so it gets cold and damp but not freezing. I know excuses

I started picking up the pace the past 2 weeks. It is good for me to get out there, reduces the stress and great for the body and mind.

This Wednesday 2 quick miles and Pizza and beer you got me going
