Another person who owns a Prius as well did not have the factory GPS installed, but took it to the dealer and they installed the GPS on her car for 100 dollars.

Is it as simple as just putting a GPS dvd in CD slot and installing it?

Absolutely not. The factory nav system has a DVD drive under the driver's seat. There's also a GPS antenna somewhere in the dash. There are also likely other parts beyond these, such as a wiring harness.

The are also extra buttons to the left and right side of the MFD (such as Map, Info and Dest) and steering wheel (well, some of have the extra buttons (Map, Info and possibly 1 more) but they don't do anything useful.

I think the NAV DVD alone is like $300 from the dealer. I ordered one on ebay for $15 to go from ver. 5.1 to 7.1, anything higher would cost me more than $100.

From 2006 on, the NAV DVD drive won't read backups, only originals. I don't think anyone has been able to burn a copy with this version Prius.

Has anyone else had problems with loading the new NAV DVD? Does NAV DVD need to be loaded by Toyota Dealership to work correctly?

We purchased the newest DVD, but it doesn't keep the setting for North, South, East or West. Map only works correctly after recalculating our position. After driving without NAV System, it loses setting completely and it is necessary to recalculate again. It only holds settings if NAV System is used on every drive.:(
