    Self-disclosure: I'm a Cowboys fan. :D

Philadelphia is the town that is hardest on their teams - at times treats them like opponents.

Even threw snowballs at Santa Claus > Philadelphia Eagles fans once booed Santa, but Santa -- jovial 63-year-old Frank Olivo -- still loves his Philly teams - ESPN

If I were a jock, why play there? Fans in NYC are hard, but at least you are probably playing for the Yankees or Giants and play in a great city. Philadelphia? Not exactly a tourists attraction, no champions, bad weather, bad fans.

Lived there for a year in college... remember Pat's, Sally's and chicken fights in Rittenhouse Square at 3AM... crowding 14 people in a Checker Cab to go to UPenn for a visit on a Saturday night... Beru Revue's first album... yeah, I remember Philly....;)

I would be interested in visiting sometime, inspite of my comments about their fans.

If the teams hate each other it can get ugly. Saw a NY Rangers vs. Philadelphia Flyers hockey game years ago at Madison Square Garden - two players squared off, tossed the gloves and helmets off and started pounding the **** out of each other. Then it had a domino effect and the referees had a time of it reeling in the fights...

Similar between Boston and NY, Dodgers vs Padres games and Raiders vs Chargers.

Is Philly more violent than NY or Boston? Can the fans be that more barbaric ?

    When I think of Philadelphia I think of cheese;

    Philadelphia - Home

I knew it was also a city in the US, but didn't realise it was the fifth largest city there. You guys need to have a word with your marketing people. I've heard of New York, Chicago, LA, San Fransisco, Las Vegas :), Miami etc and all are popular holiday destinations for us. Perhaps Philadelphia like to keep the tourists away or maybe just those from abroad.

So what is worth seeing in Philadelphia that's worth a 5 hour flight?

I have only been twice and a long time ago so I'm not a good resource. I think Philly people like going to the Jersey shore or Atlantic City to gamble.

Most if the sites seem to be historic

This may be a good start.

If Boston has been sports heaven recently (all four of their teams have won at least one championship the past decade), the Philadelphia looks like the other place - aside from the Phillies winning the World Series in 2008 - no championships in a quarter century.

A Dallas sportscaster with East Coast roots puts it this way: NYC, Boston, Philadelphia and Philly seems to be third. He did not cover tourism, but think I'd want to try NYC and Boston first. He did cover Philadelphia is the least well off of the three - definitely blue class. Unfortunately, unemployment and crime is also higher there. :( But he pegged it by calling it "The City of Brotherly Shove" - the people are boorish.

Car set on fire in Lincoln Financial Field parking lot during Cowboys-Eagles game; several people claim it belonged to Cowboys fan | Dallas Cowboys Blog

Then again there is the classic throwing snowballs at Santa Claus that clenches it.

But this is primarily why Philly sports fans have their reputation. NYC has eight teams - two in each sport, not including soccer. They have the Yankees and the Giants to pull for - they generally will have a good run. Boston: Bruins and Celtics have been champions lately. Red Sox broke their curse with two World Series and the Patriots have won three out of five trips to the Super Bowl.

The fans are nearly as hard on their teams as the opponents. While he has not won a Super Bowl, Andy Reid was the Eagles coach 14 years - a very long time. Still had a very good record, although the last five not so good. He was hired less than a week after getting fired. I predict they will be less happy with Kelly while Reid might turn Kansas City around. It may not happen, but it would be consistent with the unhappy, boorish fans in Philadelphia.

Again, I might want to visit Philadelphia but not as a sports fan and definitely not identifying myself from Texas during Cowboy's week.

The Main Line area a suburb is just outside Philly is where the wealth is. The typical family has a net worth of 1.5 Million +.

The city itself is poor however one area is changing as large condo's are built and young educated professionals move in to be near office jobs, trendy Restaurants, fancy markets and night life.

It is a very small part if the city.

    I just read that.

    Stereotypes can be misleading.

Thought I heard Rocky Balboa's accent is not really Philly but another area in the northeast.

Just like with Dallas - it's not very southern anymore

Michael Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone was born in New York City.

New York accent is hard to shake even with a good voice coach.

Sylvester's Father was from Italy and lived in NYC and was a hair dresser. His mother was French and Russian and was a wrestling promoter.

Rocky is all hollywood. The movie is in part based on Chuck Wepner who is from Bayonne NJ, and Smokin Joe Frazier who trained in Philly.

    Stallone's inspiration

The film draws inspiration from the careers of at least three boxers.

The character's name and ethnicity harken to Rocky Marciano.

The main plot of the film is based on the famous fight between Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner at Richfield Coliseum in Richfield, Ohio on March 24, 1975. Wepner had been TKO'd in the 15th round by Ali, but nobody ever expected him to last as long as he did. Wepner recalls in a January 2000 interview, "Sly [Stallone] called me about two weeks after the Ali fight and told me he was gonna make the movie."

The Philadelphia setting and details of training (including using sides of beef) come from the life of Joe Frazier.
Rocky received ten Academy Awards nominations in nine categories, winning three.
