So my 06 Prius with 98,000 just got diagnosed with Hybrid battery failure. Quoted $3500 to replace. Is this under warranty? Sounds like it. Should replacement be free or pro-rated?

That's good! How was it determined that your hybrid battery failed?

Had all kinds of error lights, including the big red triangle. Dealer ran diagnostics. I didn't ask for the codes, I may get them when they finish the car. I kind of suspected it was the batteries. There's a vent by the right side rear seat and it was "venting", so on the way to dealer I was suspecting the batteries.

Consider yourself lucky! Your failure occurred with 2,000 miles left on the warranty in non-CARB states... Now enjoy the next 100,000 miles from your new pack!

If you haven't done so, have them replace your Transaxle Oil and your Inverter Coolant for worry free driving. Good luck!

Trust me I'm a happy dude....this went from a pretty bad thing to a pretty nice thing. I will take your advice, I have no idea how much that is, but even if it's $300 I'll feel like I made out like a bandit

The ATF drain/refill (with Type WS ATF but not a flush) costs $100 at my dealer. The coolant (two loops) is a bit more expensive and the Plugs/PCV are due at about 100k miles. Mellors Automotive in Central Florida is the goto place for Prius repairs in FL if you are not happy with your dealer.

They do have more HV battery failures than expected in hot climates.

Is it just me, or does it seem like there is a much more than usual amount of traction batteries going bad lately??

Either way, awesome that you are getting yours replaced under warranty, OP! You know what they say - a bird in the bush is worth two in the traction battery compartment. Wait, nevermind - I forgot where I was going with this... :D

There are an ever expanding number of high mileage Prii as Toyota enters the 14th year of Prius production.

Ok ok good point. But the traction battery failures are coming from newer Gen 2's it seems (2006+). I suppose a traction battery failure on a 14 year old 1999 Gen1 is foreseeable. But on a 2006 with 98,000 miles like the OP's?

Im not trying to start a squabble but its just an observation.

    Prius sales numbers, by year:
From: Toyota Prius Sets 1 Million Sales as Green Car Benchmark - HybridCars.com
    • 2000 – 6,000
    • 2001 – 16,000
    • 2002 – 20,000
    • 2003 – 23,000
    • 2004 – 54,000
    • 2005 – 98,000
    • 2006 – 108,000
    • 2007 – 179,000
    • 2008 – 159,000
    • 2009 – 140,000
    • 2010 – 141,000
    • 2011 – 172,000 (estimated based on 43,000 in Q1, 2011)
On a worldwide basis, Toyota Prius topped 2 million sales in October 2010, while combined sales of all Toyota hybrids passed 3 million units last month.

Note that except for the Tsunami period (2008-2010), the numbers increase significantly year to year.

I got my codes back and I'll post them later, but had funny story to relay. I took my car in yesterday and Service Rep#1 is the one that relayed the bad news about the $3500. So I go home, read here about the batteries, and go back to dealer to inquire. Service Rep#1 has stepped out, so I talk to Service Rep#2 who confirms after checking my purchase and mileage that it falls under warranty.

This morning, Service Rep#1 calls me to tell me the car is ready and says "I have good news. I did some research, and found out that this should be covered by warranty, so I made that happen".

Glad you got your HV battery replaced for free. Now, if your 12v battery is still original it should be replaced too. As a matter of fact, if that's the case then all the codes that indicated HV needs replacing could be due to the 12v being too old. See thread: Weird stuff happening? MPGs dropping? Codes on my receipt: P0A80 - replace hybrid battery pack and P3012 - Battery Block 2 becomes weak

    EL001 -related to Hybrid Battery

I thank everyone for their assistance. I plan to do the self check on the 12volt and probably replace it unless it looks incredibly good, and to do the other 100K items mentioned above.

Mine was also replaced at 9x,xxx miles (under warranty but not by much). AFAIK, the replacement just has a 1 year parts/labor warranty, no mileage warranty at all. Still better than a stick in the eye...
