This is the first car we have owned that had bluetooth.

My wife does not get into the options and electronics much. She does not want her cellphone to be mated to her car. She rarely uses her cellphone [less than 10 minutes/month average]. Most of our phone calls come to my cell. So I mated her Prius' bluetooth to my cell. I enjoy it. :)

Sunday, we drove 5 hours to take delivery of a new truck for me [new to me, but an older truck]. It's speedometer has been dis-connected and 99% of the trip was on inter-state. So my wife agreed to pace me on our return trip. I drove the truck [she insists that she never wants to drive it], and she was in her Prius.

On the 5 hour return trip; I got a series of phone calls. Our vehicles were within sight of each other the whole time. Anywhere from three car-lengths to a 1/4 mile apart. The Prius' bluetooth took every call I received. Now inside the truck, was so loud I could not have heard my cell ringing anyway. I checked a few times to verify the time, and that was the only way I knew that I had missed incoming calls.

What really surprised me is that the Prius' bluetooth capability extends out so far. Two vehicles 'caravanning' on the interstate, because of the bluetooth, we would have never been able to call each other.

Granted this is not a serious 'problem' for us. As I have stated, my wife refuses to use her cell, and only carries one for 'emergency' and the occasional need to swipe a credit card [she has the CC swipe attachment]. My 'new' truck is really loud inside and I would have never been able to hear my cell, or carry on a conversation anyway.

btw; I am now the owner of a 8-ton dump truck :)

Has anyone else had this 'issue' with the Prius bluetooth?

Yes, before you say it, the 'answer' is for me to get in the Prius and turn-off the mating to my cell, next time before we caravan anywhere. I know that now :)

You can turn it off in the cellphone easier than in the car. Just shut off bluetooth.

The problem I have is when I am putting Pearl S into or removing her from the garage. I have manual doors, and of course, people call me when I'm outside the car opening or closing the doors. Looks funny to see me lean into the car to talk to them.

    Murphy was an optimist. ;)

Did not think of that. Thanks. It never occurred to me that driving in a different vehicle the bluetooth would go that far.

I get this sometimes, to wit: I have my phone set up to automatically start playing a podcast when the Prius Bluetooth connects. If my wife starts the car while I'm around the house, I will see my phone unlock and the podcast app launch.

Another time, my wife got in the car with the kid, realized she forgot something, and tried to call me to run it out to her; she was very confused when the car started ringing!

I think most phones are spec'ed for a range of up to 10m but it seems like many can easily exceed that.
