Recall Fixes -- Just back from Dealer

    Just back from having the steering spline/shaft/extension and the electric water pump recall work done.

    Only took them about 80 minutes, which surprised me, since they originally said 2 to 2.5 hours.....but, I have heard how the book rates jobs and how quick the techs can actually finish them up.

    Anyway, they said they had to "replace the shaft and three bolts" to fix the steering issue.

    I have to admit I was dreading hitting up the dealership. I was expecting them to push me to get the accelerator pedal cut-down, to replace my "old school allweather floor mats," etc. As well as push me to get new filters all around, change the oil and trans fluid, as well as repaint the wiper arms, etc. :rolleyes:

    But, I have to admit, they did none of that. Just -- apparently -- did the work and got the car back to me, albeit as muddy and filthy as it was when it went in.

    When I expressed amazement at the time it took, the service writer did say that since they have done a number of these already that they pretty much have worked out "all the kinks." All-in-all, not complaining, yet....

    Did they replace the fluid when they changed the pump? I've been told they just clamp the hoses and don't change the fluid....

    They claim they did....there was a line item on the "bill" that said XXX amount of Toyota SuperFujiyama Extra special 50/50 coolant. Also some liquid splashed around in the area of the pump (I opened the hood and looked).

    80 minutes is very good time. When they did ours, it took them over four hours to do it, and they did not have to change the shaft like they did yours, just one bolt. But they did make sure the steering wheel was straight. I do note that one of the little plastic clips is missing that holds the plastic cover in place over the radiator. That's Ok, as one of them was getting rough around the edges and needed to be replaced anyway. I will get a few of them next time I visit the stealer.

    Glad to hear you are pleased with the service they did cyberpriusII and also glad to hear they did not try to push the extra services on you.

    Does the new pump seem to have more oomph to it? In other words, does the turbulence seem to be stronger when looking at the inverter pump tank while the Prius is in "ready mode"?

    Had mine in for all 3 campaigns over the weekend after the coolant pump failed for the 2nd time.

    The invoice mentioned the ground-down pedal for 90L (looks like they took a significant amount away). My mats were properly anchored, so I was reluctant to have that one done, but felt my pride wasn't worth my wife's safety.

    For C0T, the invoice mentioned that my steering shaft was fine, but 1 bolt was replaced as part of the C0T campaign. We don't often force the steering to the lock limits, so this doesn't surprise me.

    Coolant pump replacement was 2nd time, thus not covered under LSC (long story, see other threads, but you're only entitled to one replacement). I was billed for a gallon of coolant, but hard to say whether they actually changed it since I wasn't billed for the drain gasket.

    You can find the Technical Instructions for Limited Campaign (LSC) HV Water Pump Replacement on line.

    Step 2 Remover the inverter drain plug. Remove and cut the drain plug gasket to prevent it from being reused.
    Install a NEW drain plug gasket. New is in bold print.

    I just got back from the Dealer too - my Prius took all of 4 hours, like they estimated.

    New inverter coolant pump and some new super long life coolant, per the service order.

    My steering shaft extension kit & 3 bolts had to be replaced too, like CyberPrius. Funny - the service order states "adjust for steering off center per safety recall C0T" but sure enough, my steering is off center about 15 degrees to the left :mad:

    On the bright side, the experience at the dealer was great. They even washed the car, although it wasnt too dirty.

    Yeah Im going to call them tomorrow about it. Im sure it will be a quick fix.

    FWIW, the pump comes with a new drain plug gasket. It's taped inside the lid of the box.

    Fair enough - the original LSC letter to dealers specified ordering the parts as a kit which included the pump and gasket. Perhaps they used the kit and only invoiced the single part?
