What extra functionality does the OEM touch screen provide?

Hello, we're looking at upgrading to a 2010 Prius (I have owned both previous generations already). I have yet to own any Prius with NAV, and I have yet to test drive a 2010 with the full touch screen stereo. I do not know what extra functionality the touch screen brings (besides TOUCH!). I have only driven a couple 2010's with the "standard" radio. And I keep specifying 2010 because that's about the extent of the budget.

Does the touchscreen always equal NAV, backup camera, and/or additional "controls" to the hybrid screens (MPG etc...)? How about other functions?

I've also driven a couple 2012 Prius C's but am not sure how those head units compare (the rest of the C certainly didn't feel like an old school Prius with exception of the engine). From my limited experience in a 2010 regular Prius and in a C, the hybrid info screens were moved forward up by the speedo (not sure I liked that). but I did drive another 2012 C that had the OEM touch screen, and I recall it having NAV and the ability to pull up hybrid/mpg info too (a bit "old school" like the previous 2 generation Prius'). I can't remember if that C's OEM touch screen had a backup camera or not, nor do I know if my limited experience with the C's touch screen even applies to the regular 2010 Prius. I'm not sure if I should "hold out" for a touch screen or not. Otherwise, I know I can get double din aftermarket stereos and just install one of those (including adding a backup camera, NAV, etc....). But an aftermarket head unit will likely NOT provide any hybrid interface, assuming the OEM touch screen even has that (the C's had it, that's why I mention it).

Just trying to determine if I should "hold out" and try to get a car with a touch screen or not. The basic 2010 models I've driven felt a bit "naked" without a touch screen to play with.....

The 2010 Gen 3 Nav screen has no hybrid system information. The hybrid system info was moved up to the instrument panel MID (multi-information display ?).

The Nav only has the GPS map, the audio controls, backup camera, hands-free phone screens and system configuration screens.

Some people like to trash the GPS system since it is not up to Garmin standards. I personally like the GPS and find it very functional once set up correctly. I especially like the built-in system versus an external system.

    I hope this helps.

I am not an expert, so I hope others can add to this....
My 2010 NAV screen also provides handsfree bluetooth functions for cellphone and music players. Diagnostics screen through the "invisible" screen buttons.
As far as the MPG info, that info is displayed on the main dash in the top right hand side next to your speedometer/odometer, so you will have it regardless of NAV unit.

Thanks! I was half expecting the 2010's Nav screen to include some hybrid information (e.g. like the 2012 C's did). Sounds like I don't need to hold out for a factory NAV though, as the most important things I would have wanted it for were hybrid info and backup camera. But I can at least add the backup camera on my own.

Do any newer model year OEM Nav screens bring back some of the hybrid info, or is it "gone for good in this generation? I just want to clarify if this was maybe a limition in certain years only, e.g. if 2010 was the ONLY year in which the OEM NAV screen did not have access to hybrid info. Again, the 2012 C's OEM NAV screen had at least some access to hybrid info, and at one point I had both screens showing me different info (NAV screen vs. MID display).

I understand that all cars will have hybrid info up farther on the dash--but I liked the info being closer up (like the older generations). I REALLY liked the C and having hybrid info on both screens. As sad as it sounds, having NAV is the last reason I'd actually want the OEM NAV unit. We already have aftermarket NAV units that suit us well.

If you search the gen3 group will find 12 pages of chat where others including myself installed a backup camera in the non-nav head unit. I have a 2012 P2. I just found out that when I connect iPod 5 to the USB, while playing a song, the album artwork is displayed on the screen. It didn't happen via the Bluetooth link.

Thanks! I took a look and found it. I haven't read all 12 pages yet but so far it looks like I might be able to get a 2012 touchscreen and install it in my 2010. Looks like someone else already installed a a 2012 touchscreen in a 2011, so unless there are major differences between 2010 and 2011, I should be able to do the same. That being said, the 2012 (or was it 2013 only?) that includes access to hybrid info, so that might be unavailable in such a swap.

The touchscreen in my 2012 Plug-In Advanced has hybrid info screens.

2010 & 2011 are the same car although the AT package changed.

Let me know if you are successful installing the 2012 radio in a 2010. I bought one but haven't figured out the wiring yet.
