Please point out that you are cheating when talking MPG to Americans. These would be UK gallons not the tiny little rip-off snake oil salesman 16 ounce to the pint US gallons. Am I right?

You would be correct, we use imperial gallons here

I once told my dad I was getting 50mpg in my Gen II Prius and he was impressed. What I didn't realise is I was using US gallons and he would have been thinking UK gallons as that is what we used in Australia back in the stone age when I was young. He would have been even more impressed if I told him I was getting about 60mpg!

Oh, if I recall correctly you use litres in the UK like most civilised nations, but your speed limits and distances are in miles. Now that's odd!

Well we have a rather mixed up set of units here.
We buy fuel in litres but generally think in terms of gallons and mpg.
We use mph as you say and yet marker posts on the motorway are set 100m apart. having said that the junction count down boards are in yards and all distances are set in miles.
We weigh ourselves in stones and when we buy timber we buy a 2m length of 4" x 2" lol. I think if anyone tried to stop us buying beer in pints there would be another civil war.

Rugby has switched to metres but golf is still played in yards, a cricket pitch is a chain in length (22 yards)
Then of course there are the really old measurements that I think still exist in some legal documents such as house deeds where you may see measurements set out as so many "rods poles perches or thereabouts"

A nice feature of the Prius is the ability to switch to kph when I drive on the continent saving me from having to do mental arithmetic all the time.

Getting right off topic here, my first car was a 1969 Ford Falcon which had a speedo in MPH, we had switched to KM/H several years before I bought the car so I spend the first few years of my driving career converting, and being a sucker for punishment I replaced that with a 1969 mini. I now own a 1968 Toyota Crown which I rarely drive, but that too is in MPH.

Having been to the UK 3 times and hiring a car each time I never got the hang of miles on the road and litres in the tank.

I suppose I quite enjoy the rich mixture of units we have here it sort of makes things interesting. I cut my teeth on old minis, such great cars to work on and fairly cheap to modify. That makes me think of another discrepancy here actually, tyres. The width is in mm but the wheel diameter is in inches. Best not start on threads eh lol

Our tyre width is in MM also while diameter is inches. Odd hey but hat might be world wide I think.

Minis were aweful to work on, that's why I now own Toyotas, no need to work on them and when you do it's easy. (I'm a qualified motor mechanic)

Really? I used to quite like working on mine especially one I'd put a fibreglass front on, I could drop the engine and subframe in under an hour on my own.
I suppose changing rear subframes, having handbrake quadrants seizing every ten minutes and body work that had nectrotizing fasciitis wasn't so much fun but on the whole I liked them.

My 17 year old son has a 1971 Beetle to learn in now so I'm on a steep learning curve again lol

Change a radiator on a Mini then do the same job on a Corolla. No comparison.

I had a 1971 VW Bus, and I marveled at how easy it was to remove the engine. I just didn't realize how often I'd need to do it! Valve and point adjustments every 3,000 miles, yuck! I'll stick with my Prius and its 120,000 mile spark plugs and 10,000 oil change interval. Dr. Porsche certainly created an engineering marvel with his VW, but that was with 1930's technology.

But if your son has a 71 VW, he's got to get a copy of John Muir's VW repair book; it is the best auto repair book that there will ever be.

We have the Lindsay Porter book but as you say the John Muir book is one that people seem to recommend.
You're absolutely right about the amount of maintenance the beetle needs but it's a good way to learn for a 17 year old and gives me an excuse to get my hands dirty again :)

To those groups making a great big convoy from various parts of the continent, here's a record to go for: Most cars in a synchronised Pulse and Glide. The current record is probably 2.

I used to drive to Schinnen from Steenwijk almost every week. I almost remember the route by heart. We'd go Zwolle, Arnhem, Nijmegen, Venlo then aim for Maastrict turning off toward Schinnen/Brunssum.

Brings back memories. But I wasn't in a Prius back then.

That's a great question, Rebound. I'll have to ask. We didn't have a PiP when we went to do our recon, so I didn't even think to look.

There will not be charging available at the park, though. That was a bummer to find out.
