Patrick some PC members(like me) replaced the OEM 12v battery with Optima yellow top 12V.
    Pros
    does fit in compartment
    very reliable
    Cons
    different battery post radius dimen
must modify both positive and negative (cable and ends)

For DIY people what amp hour/crank amps should you go with ?if selecting new 12v. obvious size is a concern too.

here's a thought, apears I'm due for a battery also, my dilema is, why even consider a lead battery in the first place?
I see in electric vehicle conversions they use the same cells as the traction bat to build an aux pack, last I checked prismatic liion's were $60x4 sure it costs more but at 2000- 3000 cycles, compared to 200, you'll never need another one again, and that is for deep cycles, you'd have to go through a half dozen priuses before you need a new battery, D cells nimh are about 9ah so 10 makes 12v x 5 makes 45 ah, thats 50 cells, not sure if it makes much sense, thats $250, or 2 traction battery cells avail on ebay cheap, I think, 7.2v x2 = 14.4 not sure on the ah may need a few in series, and also that brings up the question where to mount it, I dont believe they need a bcm, thou they are a bit funny as far as overcharging, the prius should have a way to avoid that, than again my prius surpisingly is not smarter than a housewife, long storry but my bat is on the way out because the wife was "idleing" for a few hours to keep the heat going , by the time she turned it off the batery was not even 3 v, I would have hoped these cars are smarter than this.
anywho, I read its supposed to be 12v 45ah, sounds like a deep cycle, obviously CCA are irelevant if it is even rated as such, I cant possibly be the first to consider this, it must have been done before any pointers? I have an ebike, I can have the manufacturer set me up with a 12 v 40 ah in theory about $300 with a BCM and a charger, not that i'd need in shipped to my door, but I best hurry up, this would take a couple weeks at least, and my bat is acting up allready, I need some input fast.
I get that some of you, "never met a mechanic they did not like" but if you're going to debate batery options and you can read, how about this "Ideea"

12V lithiums are getting more and more common in motorcycles due to weightadvantage. So when reading a motorcycle magazine I did recently wonder about this, but soon forgot and never even googled for them...
