Save your $45 on a filter that you have to work on,(plus oil and cleaners) and buy an extra tank of fuel.
Blow out your paper filter and double its life.
Either of these techniques will NEVER show up in your fuel mileage numbers, only in your dollars spent numbers.
And your time spent under the hood dickin' is also a number.
Have you ever messed with cleaning an oil based air filter? NOT fun....

There needs to be a Myth Busters for all the Gee Gaas that manufacturers make for the Prius.
"If you make it, they will bolt it on"
Like these guys that buy every last stupid brace that Cusco makes for the Prius. Some/most of these pieces can never be measured for effectiveness.

Or,, buy every gee gaa you can find.....
Ultimately it is not what you spend at the pump, but all your expenses rolled into a $0.00 per mile number.

But, if it wasn't for items like these, there wouldn't be a JC Whitney. :D

JC Whitney !!! Is that still around? I bought some Gas Tank Snake Tablets back in the 70's and I'm still using that same tank of gas!

Yeah, so back then I bought every dang-deal they offered that promised fuel mileage increases. CDI ingnition, intake swirlatrons, magnets for the fuel lines, fancy spark plugs, wires, air filters,,, you name it !!
Each one promised 5- 15% increase in fuel economy.

I put them all on my car at once. Incredible !!!
The only problem was I had to stop every 100 miles or so and drain fuel out of the tank.
I had gone too far and increased my fuel mileage 110% !!!!

(an oldy and moldy from the past, sorry.....)

But more important than the possible MPG gain is the fact that K&N's are reusable and eventually you'll save money....So, according to your theory, save $45 now and pay more later??? Hmm...

To me, My Time is Money.
Imagine standing over the kitchen sink with your oily hands and your K&N products sitting there.
Fun? No way. The hood of your car has been open for over an hour now.... The Wifey is about to walk in on you and soon, you're in trouble for the mess...

Me?, I reverse blow out the air filter every other oil change, or so, and Bob's your Uncle.

Plus,,,, What about those pin holes of light you see coming through the K&N?

Yes, K & N will save you money - in the short term. Long term - can you afford to replace a dusted engine?

Therein is the reason not; cleaning and re-oiling eliminates the advantage, especially when there is not. re-oiling is not only very time conc=suming but has shown to foul MAF's with lubricant yielding resistance changes not liked by the ECU.
We've made our own filters from fine wire mesh filters that required no oil, lasted forever, cost less than $5, and showed much greater hp and torque gains on the dyno than even K&N. Driving on unpaved roads just might not be so good though for those engines. Not surprisingly those were on race cars.

    Bill,
Did you use JC Whitney's "Magic Gas Siphon Pump" to drain the fuel out of your tank? I heard you could get 110% of the 110%! If you also use their "Magic Gas Can" with their "Magic Fossil" additive, it could generate another 10% of gasoline while in storage!!!

I wonder how many engines K&N has paid for to repair, if the car's manufacturer refused to honor their warranty on account of the K&N filter.

The FTC rules state that use of any other filter than the one supplied or specified by the car's manufacturer should not void the warranty, unless the part was the cause of the damage. However, what if the aftermarket part was the cause of the damage?

The Toyota air filter does not cause that much. I'll stick with them.

I've always had a K&N drop in filter in my vehicles or a K&N Intake.... My 4Runner has an intake on it currently, both Prii have drop in filters... Gen3 Prius very marginal increase in mpg but more responsive under acceleration, I no longer need the pwr button when merging on the fwy but with the pwr button so much more fun... On our C we did see an increase in mpg.... I've had them previously in my BMW and my VW and there's one in my moms Jag.... Now most know that Jags are finicky beasts and as such that has been the only car that we've owned that does not like the drop in filter.... K&N addressed the issue and all is well now....
