Is this t-sb-0012-10 or t-sb-0010-12? The heading says 0012-10 and I can't find that.

OK, here's my deal. I've been fighting this since late November, dealt with Toyota Customer Care, referred back to local dealer and have had the issue 4 times since 11/12. Dealer had car two days last week, hopefully the last below freezing mornings before spring (I'm getting old and dislike cold more and more each year). Here is what the invoice/work order shows when we picked up the car: MOVE OUTSIDE USING BATTERY POWER ONLY! DO NOT ALLOW ENGINE TO RUN. AFTER ABOUT TWO HOURS MOVE BACK INSIDE AGAIN ON BATTERY POWER ONLY! LET VEHICLE SIT OVERNITE (INSIDE). START VEHICLE NEXT MORNING. LET GASOLINE ENGINE CYCLE AND THE LOUD, GRINDING COLD START NOISE CAN BE DUPLICATED.
STARTED VEHICLE PER CUSTOMERS INSTRUCTIONS AND VERIFIED NOISE - ORDERED INTAKE MANIFOLD AS PER TSB. This is T-SB-0010-0012. They then stated the service tech says this particular T-SB has been expanded to include the 2012's AND 2013's. I have not been able to find any documentation to the confirm that but my new intake manifold (#17120-37054) is in and will be replaced as soon as I go back. Then I'll have to wait until next winter to verify if it solved the problem. Thanks to all the contributors to PriusChat for the rough, cold start information. Without it it would be virtually impossible to identify and rectify this situation because I don't believe most dealers would volunteer the info.

I am VERY MUCH interested in learning if this newest I/M (#-37054), fixes the problem.....the first one (#-37052) fixed nothing, in my experience.......FWIW

I haven't read this whole thread, but I have had the TSB done for manifold (Cold Start/Rough start up), in both of our 2011 Prius cars. And it just did it again in one car, 2 months after having it done........

Thanks for reporting in. Do you have the part number in the work order?

First off, I had the motor mount replaced 2 months before this TSB.
Below is a copy and paste from the toyota owners website. I plan an taking it in again this week to see what they say about it. Funny thing, We own 2 2011's Prius 2's, only a hundred or so cars apart from the same line, and one cars is way worse than the other, both in the EXACT same environment and driving conditions......

I had the intake manifold replaced on 4/16/13 under t-sb-0010-12. I looked at the one that was removed and the part number ended in 37052. The new one ends in 37054. The service tech stated he doesn't know what the difference is or whether or not that will solve my problem as I am the first one they have done. But, spring is here, birds are chirping, flowers are blooming and sinuses are roaring. As soon as winter gets here I'll be able to breathe again and we'll see if the problem is gone.

Oh, I forgot. My wifes cousin just bought a 2012 model 2 and wonders if anyone has heard of a problem filling up the fuel tank. Slow, not filling completely or splashing out on clothing, shoes, etc. Their service tech (at a Toyota dealer in AZ) told him this is a big problem with gen 3's. I've not seen anything on Prius Chat or anywhere else that makes me believe that. Anyone else?

Just got back from from Dealership. After an hour of looking they wanted to keep it over night to try to replicate it. I tried to explain several times that it happens very sporadically and one can ever tell. Thank heavens, I was able to video a couple of these "episodes" on both cars. Without that I have a feeling they would be doing nothing. So, I let them keep it overnight. Trust me , I really hope they can fix this issue once and for all, however after getting the TSB done and still having these issues , I know for sure Toyota has no idea how to fix this issue. Please Toyota, work on getting this fixed once and for all. Now the one 2011 Prius that does this more than the other, is now getting about 10 percent lower gas mileage.

BTW....I checked today and they claimed they did do the TSB with the correct part numbers.......

Just got a call from dealership.....Toyota wants to replace it with the newer (........054) manifold....This will be the second time I had the manifold replaced now and each time a different part #'s........

Has anyone had the issue, while this newer (.....054) manifold installed?

    Thanks

I've had this issue, brought it into Toyota this week with a video on my phone of my car knocking, closing in on my vin number at the end of the video with the hood open. I showed them the TSB and then they told me they can't replicate it and the only thing I can do is drop off the car for a week so they can see if it happens again. It's 55 degrees outside.

They said since the CEL isn't on, there's nothing they can do. I just e-mailed the service manager of the dealership who is very concerned with getting 10's on his surveys and told him the story.

    Vas

I see your in Milwaukee, I'm in Madison, if they won't help you in Milwaukee, go to Smart Motors (Madison-west side), they just did both of my cars (for the second time) , with the new ...054 manifold. Both 2011 Prius cars had good amounts of water in the manifold too. I even notice a slight difference in the smoothness of the engine, on the drive home.

    All,

Not to beat a dead horse, but we have had a couple days to drive both of our 2011 Prius cars now with the new (..054) manifold. It has made a LARGE, but subtle difference. I will explain it this way, other than the obvious rough starts from time to time, both cars were not shifting from ICE to electric ect , as smooth as new. We never noticed it, when driving before update, because I am sure it was something that was a gradual decline in smoothness. I saw somebody else mention this a couple of pages back and we also found this too be true. Also, even my wife, without me asking, noticed a difference and asked me about it, and trust me she notices nothing about cars. My wife's car was also having issues of when it would run on electric or gas or both, and would shift between them with unpredictable fashion (even after warm up). Her gas mileage was also showing a higher than normal winter MPG drop, which returned to normal the minute we left the dealer after this repair. My car has shown no change in MPG but it is way "smoother" than it was under the (...052), older manifold TSB repair.

I am not sure if this is the end of the rough start issues once and for all (time will tell), however I am extremely happy about the fix to date, it has made a great difference in both 2011 Prius cars. For the record we noticed no difference at all with the first (0052) manifold. Just thought I would share this feedback, and ask if anyone with the ..054 manifold has had a rough start since the update.

To be fair, a video is not exactly the proof of the problem as one can easily fake the noise like I did in my youtube video.

Sure, lets just not listen to customer concerns and blow them off.

I don't get it, Toyota pays them to get this done. I work in this industry, what they're doing is unexplainable.

It happened to me (noise from the engine) several times during last winter. I googled it and that's how I found that there is a TSB.

I have an appointment tomorrow at Westbury Toyota for oil change and DMV inspection and going to talk to the service manager regarding this issue. I did try to discuss it via the prone but they were not interested to hear from me, just checked and found that there is no recall and told me "bring the car in, we'll see".

Obviously they will not be able to replicate the problem since it is like 18°C in NY... I'll update what happened.

Update: Dealership refused to do anything since there were no error codes and they cannot replicate the problem (which was expected). At least I have my complaint logged in their system so I can refer to this issue next winter. Service manager told me that I'll have to leave the car at dealership/service for couple days but they will give me a loan car.

P.S. My Viper alarm stopped working completely after inspection, not sure why. Going to alarm installer and will check why but wondering if the service is the reason for this failure or it is just coincidence.
