I replaced our BMW 335 twin turbo coupe with the Prius. Yes it is slower but you adjust. The Prius can actually surprise you in Power mode. I find that it is lots of fun to drive in a very different way. Do your test drives as you plan to. Also read up on the technology in the Prius powertrain - it is fascinating.

Thanks, that does help. And yes, everyone I've told has called me crazy and laughed because I am known as the guy with the loud and fast mustang.

I would, but I can't afford both. Plus my plan is to have a $10-15k fun car that is a lot faster than my current mustang, but without all the luxury (leather, nav, etc)
I've test driven a C already (coworker's car) and I was pleased with the performance since I was expecting it to be a snail. Also, the technology (which I have read up on) is what has me so interested. Its very cool. The reliability is also a strong point.

If I read your time slip right it said 12.15? That is very fast!
You are right to be concerned about acceleration in a new car. I have owned/driven cars with scary fast acceleration like your Stang. The kind of a car that you really need to see if you have it in you to keep your foot planted.
The Prius is no problem. Gives me an idea for a thread?;)

Yup, 12.15. I do know that I'll miss it, but a kid is coming and we all have to make sacrifices Wife says I can have a another fast car later.

Though the male ego might take a hit when going from a sports/performance car to a Prius, but I'd have to think that getting the high gas mileage is a big incentive for the change. Instead of low rumble and the power potential, the Prius will offer you sleek styling with an assortment of gadgets and digital indicators that will make keep your mind occupied. I assure, the Prius is not a boring car to drive....

Yeah. I'm already certain its happening. I've been searching for a new 2012 which isn't happening. I really want to get one for $22k otd (all taxes and fees). I've already began compiling my list of modifications: new head unit, speakers, springs, sway bar...

I got a 2011 Package 2 for $22k OTD in December 2011 when the 2012's were already on the lot with their fancy bluetooth, backup cameras, and screens. It was an advert. car and I elected to take the $1k off on top instead of the APR special. I replaced a 270whp Eclipse Spyder GT. Ran a 14.5 second 1/4 mile which wasnt bad for a 3.8 Iron block and head FWD V6.

And that is why I'd like to find a 12 now. Odds are I can't though.

Dealer in my are has 2013 model 2 for $22,477 if you qualify for the $500 military rebate. Otherwise just add $500. They also have a few 2012's in all packages and most colors. What part of the world are you in?

I'm in Atlanta, GA. Don't see any 2012 Two's anywhere near. I can get a Blizz White 2013 Two for $22k before taxes but I want $22k AFTER taxes.

Crap, looks like MSRP may have gone up about $1k for 2013 versus 2012.

You could try and talk them down? Try and find a few cars to follow based on their time on the lot. They may be willing to negotiate on something thats been on their lot for a few weeks or months depending on turnaround at your dealership.

I traded in the world's fastest production sedan (Cadillac CTS-V) for a Prius and would do it all over again. Love the Prius, I still drive my 126 mile daily commute at the same speed -- but for much, much less $$$, and not working for the gas pump any more!

This one I could not do. I'm assuming it was a second gen.

Never been a speed/power boy when it came to cars. But had a Subuaru Baja before my Prius, and will say that more than double the mpg's was what I was looking for and am enjoying. I averaged about the same as you, though it was on regular gas. So as you noted, you will save twice.

One word of caution though, a good number of us Prii owners are actually driving more. LOL My average mileage is up about 30% because of less worry/concern on fuel bill.

With a kid on the way you are on your way, like it or not, in growing in to a new phase in your life.

I went from a 2003 Trailblazer to a 2013 Prius three, the transition has been easy and fun. I loved my Trailblazer, it was a great truck with lots of pick up when you asked for it, but the $60.00 gas bills were becoming too much to bear. Sold the truck to my sister, so that her kids in school could have it. (Great used cars with history are really hard to come by)
Had my Prius for three weeks now, put 8 gallons of gas in it, and love every minute of owning it. Looking forward to a big road trip this summer!
By the way, I found the interior to be very roomy, And I'm not concerned about spending a couple of days inside during the road trip.

If it counts, the car I replaced with a Prius was half-fast. :p

I bought a 2010 Prius under the "Cash for Clunkers" rebate. I turned in my Mitsubishi Eclipse. I thought I would miss being up higher in traffic but didn't notice it. Also, my husband, a big guy, says it's pretty roomy, even in the back. If I stay around the speed limit I can get at least 45mpg in ECO mode. My favorite part of owning a Prius is when my friends complain of gas prices. I once got pulled over for speeding and the cop told me he didn't know these cars went that fast! : )

I can’t speak to replacing a fast car, but I can tell you that you’re picking an excellent car for a new parent. Lots of room, very safe, even has the built in hooks for the car seat. Best of luck on finding the one you want and let us know what you get.
