The United Kingdoms longest serving Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, the "Iron Lady" has passed. She was raised a grocers daughter, took on every challenger, never backed up, and never backed down. She led her country through several wars, shrugged off attempts on her life and was one of, if not America's greatest ally.

Maybe one of her less obvious legacies is the UK will remain out of the EU. The Thatcher government could not have done what it did if it had been in the Euro Zone - Britain was like a number of ailing countries like Greece.

    A failed Socialist Utopia.

    If people ask why Thatcher had it in for the Miners or the Unions, then they should read this;

Three-Day Week - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Winter of Discontent - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'm only in my early 40's but as a kid I remember watching the clock on the tv click to the hour at 7pm (or whenever it was) and then the power going for a few seconds later as the Country plunged into darkness. I remember the rubbish (trash?) not being collected for weeks and it piling up in the streets. Queuing for petrol and not getting and my dad having to walk 5 miles to work each way because the buses weren't running (either on strike or out of fuel).

Unions have a use, but they also took the piss. We needed someone to stand up to them and the only person who actually had the balls to do so, was a woman.

I guess we will never know if the Iron Lady and the Gipper were friends with benefits.

Can you hear it in the distance
Can you sense it far away
Is it old Rudolph the reindeer
Is it Santa on his sleigh
    It's heading up to Easington
    It's coming down the Tyne
    Oh it's bloddy Maggie Thatcher
    And Michael Heseltine
    chorus
    So merry Christmas Maggie Thatcher
May God's love be with you
We all sing together in one breath
    Merry Christmas Maggie Thatcher
    We all celebrate today
'Cause it's one day closer to your death
They've come to raid your stockings
And to steal your Christmas pud
    But don't be too downhearted
It's all for your own good
    The economic infrastructure
    Must be swept away
To make way for call centres
    And lower rates of pay
    [repeat chorus]
And they've brought their fascist boot boys
And they've brought the boys in blue
And the whole Trade Union Congress
Will be at the party too
And they'll all hold hands together
    All standing in a line
    'Cause they're privatising Santa
    This merry Christmas time
    [repeat chorus]
    [repeat chorus]
Oh my darling, oh my darling, oh my darling Heseltine
    You're a tosser, you're a tosser
And you're just a Tory Swine

Margaret Thatcher had a mixed record, I think.

On the plus side, she invented soft-serve ice-cream,, without which she would be lost.

On the minus side, there were her politics.

Says an expat (I'm guessing) o_O

Easy to criticise from the side lines but if your electric kept cutting out for 12 hours a day because the unions wanted a 40% pay rise, you might see it differently. It happened to us in winter at night so no heating worked - no electric heating and no electric to run the central heating. I guess you might be concerned if your power station workers cut the power off for 12 hours during the heat of the day in summer and thus not able to use your a/c. If you're not an expat, you'd like it even less if I suggested how your politicians dealt with the matter.

Thatcher was harsh and hard, but our Country was on its knees in the mid to late 70's and would have gone the way of Greece today if she hadn't kicked **** with the Unions. I remember my parents worrying about mortgage interest rates running at 25%, not having petrol because the truck drivers were on strike, not having tv or street lights because the miners were on strike. I know there are communities in the mining areas who hate her, but there are just as many people out there who hated what the miners did bringing the country to its knees.

There are TWO sides to each story and the reason for her early decisions happened in the miserable years of the Callaghan Government. James Callaghan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Just to add to what Grumpy was saying, go and look up Arthur Scargill. He was the miners' union leader, a socialist in the true (not the paranoid US right-wing) sense of the word and wanted to bring down the government. My dad was in the RAF and I lived in Germany during the late 70s but I remember the strike in the 80s when the Conservative government made a policy decision to shut down coal. That decision was directly attributable to the militant union politics.

But the hatred really stems not from union law, which few people are seekig to change, but from policies of privatization that people view as profit over people, policies that significantly weakened support for those in need (Care in the Community, benefts requirig permanent addresses) and policies favoring the wealthy (large top rate tax cuts and,her downfall, the Community Charge more infamously known ss the Poll Tax).

The experience of living under Margaret Thatcher's Conservative government is what makes many British people, including myself, scoff when Americans claim their country is a bastion of Capitalism. You aren't even close.

And I will add to that. It was the height of the Cold War and the union leaders were regular visitors to Moscow! Doesn't take a brain surgeon to work out why :)

One slight correction. It was the end of the Cold War. An event that both Reagan and Thatcher could not understand and could not see occuring before them because of their ideology.

As for the privatization of Thatcher/Reagaonomics, the coal companies over the coal miners for example. It's proven a failed experiment, more so in the US with $14T in oil war debt and it's lack of national health system which Thatcher was unable to destroy, the 20% of GDP health care burden in US vs. the 10% of GDP in UK has been a constant anchor along with the $1T a year oil war spending and resulting debt.

We, UK and US alike, drive Japanese hybrids due to polices of Thatcher and Reagan. Smart government industrial policy produced the Prius while the government run by auto and oil corporations killed such development in US and UK. We need to drive Prius (global warming, oil wars) due to pro-oil energy and environmental policies of Thatcher and Reagan.

History will not and has not been kind to Thatcher and Reagan.
