Just spent the evening replacing the original HID headlights with, what I was told is an OEM equivalent; Philips D4R 35W. They work properly for about a minute and then both turn off simultaneously. I can restart them, but they continue to turn themselves off after 1 minute of use.

Any ideas? I would like to drive my 2005 Prius at night ;-)

    Thanks,
    Dave

D4R is your problem. Those are bulbs for the 06-09 HID Priuses. D4R are apparently mercury-free (and use a different ballast) while the older D2R apparently aren't.

    You need genuine Philips D2R.

Out of curiosity, can you answer how long your D2R bulbs lasted at 04-05 (NOT 06-09) Prius owners w/HIDs - how long did they last? | PriusChat Can you look at the bulbs you removed? They should be D2R.

Original bulbs were Osram D2R, as you stated. They lasted reliably for 7 years (2005-2012), and then began to fail, but when the weather got colder they began to function again. I am only changing them now, so 8 years of use.

Anyone out there want the D4R bulbs? Will sell them at a very reasonable price.

    Thanks,

    Dave

Interesting... that they were Osram. (I've only owned an 06 and mine had Philips D4R.) Hmmm.. so perhaps there was more than just the type of bulb and ballast that changed but also the bulb manufacturer?

Since these bulbs will fit your vehicle, would you like me to send them to you? They are useless to me. Since they age as a function of their use (not storage) they should still be good when you need to swap yours out in a couple of years.

You can write me directly if you like: [email protected]

I think I'm ok. I've changed one bulb already and have another spare D4R on hand.
