I have seen the threads on installing backup cameras which require drilling holes. I wonder if there are alternative methods Can I mount a camera inside the car, using magnets? I may have to run wires from the front side, but I think that is OK.

One issue would be that I cannot have night vision from inside the car, as the glass may not be transparent with respect to night vision?

You don't have to drill the holes if you will find a camera which you can install instead of plate lights. Another alternative is the camera which is inbuilt into the license plate cover. I am not sure if camera mount inside of the car will be a good idea.

I have a 2010 Prius and just finished installing a backup camera from OttoNavi. No cutting necessary. Lift up the trunk lid and look just to the left of the button to pop the trunk. (I'll assume that the 2012 is similar to the 2010)
There is a black insert there. Pop out the black insert and add the OttoNavi backup camera. The camera has been on my prius for a month and it hasn't moved.

Actually, that's where the OEM camera is installed on my Prius"v."

It could be that's where the back-up camera option is installed on all Prii.

Just for clarification - all Australian c's come with a rear view camera as standard equipment.

thanks much for sharing to camera install. I also have a 2010 prius where I'm strongly considering adding a camera. Did you run wires to the monitor or by use of wireless transmitter?? Thanks again. Anyother tips related to this install??

I ran my wires up the driver windshield column along the interior roof trim. The through the rubber hose between the car and the trunk panel and around the trunk door trim to the license plate area. Tied power into the reverse lights. Also connected the radios backup CCD input the the reverse lights.

It sounds like a lot if work. But it's mostly tuck and go. Except for the trunk panel area.

Thank you again for sharing details. Do you how good or effective the wireless video transmitters are??

No personal experience with the wireless transmitters. Though the people I've talked with (at least the OttoNavi versions) are happy with their installation and quality.

no real point of installing a wireless one because you still have to run wires to the camera itself. and then run wires to the receiver of the camera to the dash unit. so if you are running wires, you might as well do it with all wires. honestly installing a camera takes like less than 30 mins. thats if you already know how to access the back of the display unit so you can connect the camera wire.
