Attempting a Nexus 7 permanent install while keeping factory stereo

    Hello,

    Well I don't know if this has been tried before but I'm trying to install a nexus 7 while keeping the factory stereo. I got everything figured out, I just need to work on the actual installation and work a few details here and there. Please note that I am not a professional installer and you will see some issues here and there. I will post the progress in this forum. Thanks.

    My first question was, can the factory stereo works with out the face plate? can I use the steering control to control the volume. Well there is only one way to find out... faceplate.jpg

    Yup, The stereo works without the face-plate on. I can control the volume and select different sources from the steering wheel!! Now I have to figure out how to install the Tablet to an aftermarket double din cover...

    With some modification to the $14 Scosche TA2105B and a dremmel, I was able to get this point. I then covered everything with 3m carbon fiber vinyl. I also used a hot glue gun to secure the double din adapter to the outer plastic cover. Tablet not yet secured.jpg

    Quick test on direct sun light using the HD® Anti-glare/Anti-fingerprint ScreenGuardz by BodyGuardz Protection for Mobile Devices | Screen Protectors, iPhone, iPad, Android, iPod, Blackberry, Skins, Covers, Protection, Cases, Shields. The nexus was setup to full brightness during the test. The screen is readable/usable but the colors are washed out. I drove a couple of miles with the GPS on and the signal is poor. I might try to relocate the GPS antenna somewhere else to see if I get better view of the satellites. Now I have to figure out power up the tablet.

    Don't be surprised if the hot glue gives out on a hot day. Sometimes you can grind up some of the plastic you cut out and mix it with some slow acting superglue, or acetone, to make a paste to adhere and fill gaps in the hard plastics. If all else fails, 2-part epoxy.

    Does the tablet's GPS work once it's imbedded in the dash like that?
    All the metal around it has to weaken the GPS signal.

    I used the hot glue to line up the plate with outer plastic trim because its way easier to use for that kind of job. I then used 5 minute plastic epoxy to secure it in place since is way stronger (180psi vs 2500 psi).

    I'm sure the GPS signal is weak, but the unit still able to lock to 9 birds quickly. I will be driving 6~7 hours tonight and that will be the ultimate test top see if the tablet is up to the task. I can always use an external Bluetooth GPS dongle just in case the one built in fails..

    ucsmfu nice install!! Do you have any issues with the touch screen not recognizing some touches since the bottom part is deep in the din adapter?

    Interesting, but I wouldn't be surprised if the tablet ends up eventually failing due to the high in cabin temps (if the car is parked outside a lot) and temperature cycling. I wouldn't give it longer than a year or so.

    Consumer tablets, esp. cheap ones aren't designed for these types of applications.

    Oh yeah, and I doubt you care about the battery in the tablet, but if it's still attached and being topped off to 100%, it'll surely be almost worthless after a hot summer.

    at first I had problems with the drag down notifications at top, but than I fixed it while moving the tablet down further more.

    Now there's no problems :)

    cool, Im using this program (GMD GestureControl ★ root - Android Apps on Google Play) to control the tablet while driving. Two finger swipe from top bottom play/pause music. two fingers swipe from right to left to skip song and two finger swipe from left to right to go back. You can create your own gestures to open and control programs/settings.

    I haven't had a problem with my setup yet. but I am planing to add a on/off button somewhere in the dash just in case the tablet crashes and need to be restarted.

    If you want you can disconnect the battery, but you will have to use this command on fast boot (fastboot oem off-mode-charge 0)

    This command sets auto power on instead of charging, but I haven't tried yet because I don't need it with the custom ROM I'm using. (Timur's Kernel - USB ROM - USB Host Power Management - USB Audio - Nexus 7 Development - RootzWiki)
