It's not going to make any difference when you fill up. Well maybe you're lugging around a few less pounds of gas on average, but...

Average speed is somewhat difficult to determine. The route to Reno was on Interstate 5 to
Mt. Shasta to Susanville and down to Reno. All highway at speed limit. (55-70mph) In the Reno area we went
to Virginia City and Lake Tahoe so we climbed a few mountains as well.

I never took that route before. I thought you took Int. 80 which is very hilly. Not bad for 55-70.

We had 21 days of triple digit temps here last summer as well as 26 record setting days and limited ac. I did have to turn the ac on once or twice as the batteries were suffering. It's all about what you can handle, no need for a heat stroke while trying to get those extra 2-3mpg.

no comparison.. Bay Area heat is nothing compared to you guys! High 70's here = AC time!

Good stuff! Something to strive for but I just can't drive at her speeds especially in my area.

    There are some major differences;
Hills, her area is flat. I live in a hilly area and my approach to get home has a section that's about 20%.
    Speed(max is 34mph)
Commute distant is confusing. Though it notes her commute was 7.45 miles, it also notes

"Warm up from dead cold to final destination totaled 75, so the average distance traveled was 31.2 km (19.368 miles) from dead cold to parked."

I think what got us over the 50 mpg calculated for the trip was Michelin Energy Saver AS tires 195x65x15, I know
they obtain at least 2-3 mpg over the stock Yokohama that came with our Prius.

I have 17" wheels with factory Toyo's. From what I read, they are pretty good for mpg.. for 17's...

I believe that the Yokohama Avid tire is a low rolling resistance tire. The 17 inch wheels/tires will hurt a little for MPG over the same tires in the 15 in wheel format, (195.65.15).

On my next tank(#7) and mpg based on MFD is up again! 330 miles in, mpg is at 51. From what I read, this maybe due to warmer weather. NTL, nice to see! If it's right, I should be around 48mpg! Much better than I expected with my Persona(17" wheels). So perhaps the 17's are not that bad after all?

Also worth noting, I this is with trips with AC on to hilly areas too!

Warm weather is your friend when it comes to improving MPG's.

Check out my fuelly graph... My mpg's have been going up steadily since purchase so don't think it's all due to warmer weather.

You're 60+ MPG is unreal! nice job! Why isn't the link working though?

Hmmm, it is adding a "-2" on the end of my fuelly Link. So it sents people to the wrong area.

The 60+ MPG is because I only have the one hill (Dublin Grade) and my trips are 30+ miles each way and (for the bay area) mostly flat.

I would struggle to get over 50 mpg if I had your commute in the City. Too much energy is wasted on hills (going up and not recovered going down). Still, the Prius is good for the City, because the regenerative braking will help your friction brakes last longer and you still are getting nearly 45 mpg in the process.

I head out toward your area fairly often as of recent.. I buddy of mine lives out there and we ride/race out there.. Dublin grade isn't bad at all.. I recover my mpg everytime if I remember right..

I had to show a mustang a thing or 2 on that pass.. she insisted she had to pass me just because.. which is fine but when she slowed down as soon as she did several times.. it was clear it must have been a Prius thing.. then when I passed her back she tried again and I think realized what she was doing.. point is Prius isn't too shabby on the freeway!

Exactly! and I'm sure since it was also due to it being a brand new Mustang rag top, she had to show it off.. until she couldn't pass me.. ;) It's not what your driving, it's who's driving it.
