I'm planning to install a 2000W subwoofer with amplifier into my 2010 Prius, but unfortunately people suggest that 2000W is too much for the 12V system of the Prius, because the inverter can only handle up to 1000W (or about 65 amps of continuous current). 2000W is just 3 horsepowers - not that significant!

Prius also has 200V system (HV=high voltage system), which is connected to the low voltage 12V system via wimpy inverter + fuse. Some sources claim that the stock fuse is designed to handle up to 100 amps. In order to handle 2000W I need 2000W divided by approx. 13.8V == 145 amps! In ideal world I need a little more than that to be safe.

    The questions:
    1. Do I have to tap into HV battery system and buy beefier inverter to achieve such a kick A$$ power?
    2. Are there any other options to power 200oW amplifier? Diesel generators in the trunk and such won't work for me - sorry, bro.
    Thank you!
    Alex.

I have an idea, take two M-80's hang them 2 feet away from each ear, then light the fuses.
That last thing you ever heard thing was the pressure wave from a equivalent 2kw audio blast in a very confined space.
Look up "Tinnitus" when it happens to your ears, you will wish time travel actually was an option! I do!
    2kw RMS really?
    WHY?

It's highly unlikely your amplifier will come remotely close to 2k watts. Most car audio today is grossly overrated unlike the car audio of the late '80's where most was underrated. Get a more efficient woofer and a class D amp and you have all the impact you could need.

What kind of amp / sub are you going to install? 1, 2, 4, or 8 ohm configurations will vary the amp's output. If the real world RMS range is lower you may be fine.

I have just a single Boston 10" sub and a small 320W mono amp and that's enough to move my hair and rattle things around. 2kw sounds fun if it all works out. Do you compete or are you just trying for some wicked boom?

Are you planning on running the subwoofer at peak power all the time? I highly doubt it. And in all reality it is an impossibility. So your average power will be significantly less even at full volume. Another thing most people don't realize is that fuses are not fast blow (even "fast blow" ones). A 100 amp fuse will run 100 amps for a very long time as in several minutes to hours. They usually are rated to blow at 150% their current rating. So unless you are doing SPL competitions, I wouldn't worry about it. And if you are doing competitions, you really need to rethink your choice of vehicle and amount of power. A single sub and 2kW is a nice start. You will probably need to add about 3 or 4 more subs.

Low frequencies don't impact your ears. You can achieve heart attack or liver damage, but you will not get "Tinnitus" because of a sub. Anyway the question is not about healthcare.

Depends on brand you are buying. For example you can buy some 320W mono amp and the real world RMS range will be lower.

Can you please show me a video how your Boston 10" running on 320W amp"moves your hair". I'll give a $10 if it really does.

The most sane answer I've found so far. However, how can you be sure you will not damage your inverter on continuos music playing which is close to max volume? The repair could be expensive.

Oh well yeah, I would trade my Tinnitus, CAUSED TO EXTREME SOUND EXPOSURE, my own fault, in for a Heart Attack anyday....
    Are you kidding me?
Over exposure to massive levels is not good. It should be part of the discussion, let's see, your driving down the road, and crash because of a sound induced heart attack! No problem!
Like I said 2 kw RMS in a car, are you kidding me?

I don't see the need or have the desire to justify my integrity to you, nor would I want your whopping $10. Perhaps if you've been on the Forum awhile, I'd consider it. Thanks for the offer though ;-)

My Eclipse XA1000 is rated 320RMS and 490 peak. It may not hit that but I trust Crutchfield's data. The Boston G110 is in a 1.4' ported box and is designed to handle the power and move some air. So when it hits on a few notes at high volume, in the hatchback, which is perfect for bass, it won't create a wind, but yep, you can feel it.

The original post was about whether or not the car would handle a bigger system. Perhaps it may best be posed to the folks at Toyota who may offer a genuine answer versus personal opinions and bs comments.

Well I run a 2 k watt system and so far I've had a few problems with it.
    The good
I can run my amp full tilt with little or no headlight dim. DD m2a @.5 ohm has been clamped by others at
    Digital Designs M2a
-Starting at 14.6v dropping to 13.2v
-starting at .5 ohms rise to 1.08 ohms
    -Power: 2506 watts
So really I'm probably not doing 2500 but I know I'm pushing my amp till the clipping light come on so I'm probably in the neighborhood of 2000 ez

    Cons
I can't start playin subs right away, takes some time for the amp to get primed with electricity. I'm working on troubleshooting this issue, been busy at work.

Personally I too think 2 k is a bit much, but it's nice to have when u really want it. I say go for it if that's your thing. What kind of subs were you looking at ?

Hey Radiospank and SanchoRubyroid! Thanks for support in this "hostile" Prius community. 2K isn't really my thing, I just got a hint from my friend that "Bass is never enough" - same as with money. The reason is need a sub is to just add some depth to my sound, a lot of depth. Also to sometimes scare truck drivers with my pimped-up Prius :)

Appreciate the feedback, everybody! Sorry for your Tinnitus KK6PD The decision has been made: 1000W sub it is!!! :) Sounds like Prius can handle it and a little more - I just don't want to overtax it.

Seriously, I don't really need 2k sub, I just wanted to hear your guys' opinion on if this is even possible in Prius without messing with HV system.

Here's what we do in Russia:

1000 watts should be enough bass for almost anyone, I don't know why people scoff at anything higher than a 500 watt setup, imo 500 watts is barely enough.
also The HV battery really helps with the high powered setup like I have, It's a nice bonus for having a hybrid vs regular car with alternator

Oh you wild and crazy Russians, that's actually a funny video...... Yeah, I kinda sorta did the same wild stuff you all are doing, but started with PA Systems for bands I mixed sound for during the college years, the guns and explosions haven't helped either. Wild and crazy youth, but you pay when you older..... who knew???
Good luck with the install, I would like to at least see a pic or two of the project when you are finished with it!

I would definitely post some pics of the install when I'm done with it, but it won't be soon - a few months, I'm currently up to something else. However, I've already started the assembly... with the 40 oz beer bottle! :)

nice... just kind of goes against the whole gas saver thing with the heavy box and sub in there... im definitely adding a sub to mine just not that extreme

You'd be surprised: I'm still getting about 49 MPG with my daily commute - AT FULL BLAST. My system is only 1 kW, which translates into about 1.34 horsepower - not that big of a deal. There is some extra weight, but when compared to the size of the car - it is negligible. The whole system doesn't even weigh as much as my wife (sometimes a passenger)... and my wife is not an average American wife :)))

So don't worry bro - get yourself a nice 2kW T-line box and enjoy the DEEP bass!!!

Windows are just fine, I'm just a little worried about the rear-center brake light - it is about to fall off. :)

BTW, I can't wait for another local "Prius-hypermiler-gay" party - I'm going to show up like a Man now! )))
