We have two toyota Prius vehicles. Our first one hit 200,550 miles and instantly lost fuel mileage, lost cruise control, gas engine didn't shut off, and we took it in for service. Our vehicles are religiously serviced & fluids checked daily (they are also driven daily). This one was my 2010 model & we were told it was a "Hybrid Battery System Failure" and the tech advised us it was a $10,000+ repair! He suggested we just "run it until it doesn't work" if we didn't want to fix it. The KBB of our car is less than $10,000 now too - we love the prius and hadn't had any issues until now - we expected tires, filters, all the routine things and maintained them top notch. We were stunned.
One week later our second Prius, a 2011 model, hit 200,550 miles and voila! same symptoms. We have a service scheduled for this afternoon, but we knew they will say the same thing. This is a nightmare.
I wish we had been warned in our manual that "all vehicles will need a $10,000+ repair at 200,550 miles" but alas, nothing in my research found that. We set aside money for repairs which always covered expected repairs, but nothing like this! We were told that as long as we took care of it (took it in for regular maintenance, drove easily, etc.) our car would last as long as we took care of it. Needless to say, we are crushed at this news.
In the span of one week, my husband & I have gone from very satisfied Prius owners to feeling like we were jipped. The real bummer is that we still owe more than half our purchase price on both cars (we bought them 2 years ago as new cars, so we still owe more than twice their KBB value). We can't afford the repairs. We could cover half of one repair, but they don't to financing on repairs.
To add insult to injury, we received an email from the dealership manager about how he "love your business and wants to help sell your older cars and buy new ones" (we operate a taxi business) and how "your cars still look so new! An example of the Prius' superior engineering" (Yes, we pride ourself in caring for our cars). Then we had a rep call us to ask how we were pleased with our dealership (we bought a third car from there a year ago). None of them wanted to help us with our repair, of course, they simply said "buy a new one" (so much for "superior engineering").
Has this happened to anyone else? It is just too strange that both our cars went from running perfectly to bummer of a ride at exactly 200,550 miles...

First, you need to post in the right section as this is the Prius V wagon section.
Second, you need to include your location so we can help you find alternative repair solutions.
Third, there are probably 100 posts on how to fix this with used parts for 1/10 the cost. Do it by finding a qualified independent Prius mechanic.

    EcoRide,
Search for ReInvolt and see if they offer refurbished batteries for the Gen 3 Prius cars. You should be able to get through this for less than $2,000/car.

Eco ride, the quality of our help is going to depend on knowing where you are.

There are several knowledgeable mechanics who could fix both cars for less than half the price you are quoted for one car. (if that was US dollars)
Here are some examples (but there are many more)

that's some serious mileage for 2 years.. this must be a business vehicle?

What exactly is the failure? you noted "Hybrid Battery System Failure". I hope to hear it's just the battery as that can easily be replaced.

not a good 1st post.. there are alternatives as noted than dealer.

Weird, both cars failing at the same mileage. I smell a "drive-by" post until OP comes back.

Too strange both cars failed at 200,550 miles. Please post the pictures of the ODO reading for both cars to prove that is true.

I do not know, could just be the OP's writing style, prove me wrong, but it sound like the ol' Nigerian Prince's desperate plea to give you money, LOL.

Anyway: $10,000+ is what the dealership quoted? Even for a dealership that seems very steep. And if you are serious, do check out Re-Involt.

Is this real? The mileage sounds very high. If the HV was dead the car would not run.

    Anywho
Get a independent shop and use salvage parts.
A salvage battery is probaly $500 plus labor another few hundred than you on the road again faster than Willie Nelson can sing a song.

I doubt this is a legit post. In case it is, maybe this is new Toyota business model? "Pay to play" prompt exactly at 200,550 miles. Not unlike the gen 2 odometer maxing out at 299,999 miles?

Anyone saw gen 3 exceeding 200,550 miles without this error?

I was in Chicago not too long ago and rode a prius taxi. So I was just curious as to what mode the driver was using. To my surprise, he was using EV mode all the time. Just wondered if it causes the battery to prematurely wear out. Also wondered if the OP was the operator of the prius or he just leased the prius to taxi drivers a s a business and those taxi driver's just drive it without knowing the proper use of it and it's function or mode. Since they do drive in lower speeds, severe stop and go scenarios or idling for long periods of time because of traffic, it may have used a lot of battery power not to mention air conditioning and heater use. I also would like to know if he also serviced his battery fan. I remembered a while back about a member showing a photo of the battery fan after X amount of time and it was so dirty.

    I agree with friendly_jacek,

If this is a real post, it sounds exactly like my buddy's Gen2 odometer lock up at 299,999 miles.

    It's a software problem.
There most likely is no hardware problem.
And it is part of the designed system.

How can both cars throw all these faults one day and be running fine the day before?

I hope EcoRide comes back to tell us more and hopefully share the fix to this problem.

I hope to be at that odometer reading someday !!

It sounds like Toyota is fine with having Gen2 odometers with a designed in failure at 299,999 mi. and not offer a free fix for all those with this problem.

    Good Luck EcoRide!

200,000+ miles on two vehicles, one which is less than 2 years old?

That's a LOT of miles for 2 people to put on 2 vehicles....very quickly.

Just not enough details here. Exactly what "Hybrid Battery System Failure" are you talking about? Complete battery replacement at the highest paid dealership level shouldn't come near costing 10,000.

You say you run a Taxi Business? So my guess is that these vehicles got operated as personal transportation vehicles AND service Taxi's?

In any case, 200,000 miles on any vehicle would be considered pretty good reliability and I'd want more details as to exactly what failure and what repairs are being justified as being a $10,000 repair.

Eco ride has not signed on again since his first and only post, perhaps his PC had 200,550 miles on it.
