So I'm about 2 months into my 2013 Prius, with 3000 miles (yea, I drive alot, hence the prius) and the check engine light comes on.

I find an autozone, and have them pull the codes for me:
    PO441 and PO455
    Leaks in the EVAP systems.
    Possible Causes:
    Faulty fuel cap
    EVAP Line Leakage
    etc...

Now I swore I had the gas cap on correctly, but I took it off, and put it back on again, making sure to click it, since this is the #1 cause of check engine lights.
I then had to drive almost 60 miles, and the Check Engine light stayed on the whole time.

I thought the code would clear if I fixed the gas cap. Am I wrong?

Second question, am I damaging the Car by driving with this code, since I have almost 170 miles to drive tomorrow before I could possible see the dealer on Saturday.

I believe those kind of codes take three cycles (on/off) to clear. If not, the cause apparently has not been corrected. Personally I wouldn't drive in that situation, until I figured it out.

Rent a car at dealer. A yaris at my dealer is like $30 a day unlimited mileage.

Most likely the gas cap did not seal. If you take the car back to the dealer and they diagnose a loose gas cap, there may be a charge to reset the codes; some dealers charge for this and some don't. Even if you have a leak in the EVAP system, you will not damage the car by driving it. I would just drive it and see if the CEL light disappears. If it was a loose cap, the CEL light will eventually disappear. If the CEL light does not disappear, then take it to the dealer at you first opportunity to have it fixed under warranty. No reason to worry or shell out money needlessly.

iirc, i had to have my local mechanic reset the light, even after finding the cap loose and refastening it.

I'm wondering if the light has to be reset. It's been three cycles (three trips more than 5 miles) and it's still on.

I'll find out this afternoon when the dealer looks at it.

Buy a diesel, no EVAP system. :D
I haven't heard of any cars going up from an EVAP system leak. Just get it to a dealer when you get the chance, it could be as simple as a bad cap.

100% Warranty on a car that new, and they should provide a free rental if it takes overnight.

So the diagnosis from the dealer. Loose cap.

They also said the Prius does not clear the EVAP code, unlike other toyota cars, it must be manually cleared.

I'm going through the same thing. I have a feeling the gas cap is bad on my 2009. I have a new one. Will clear the codes with my scan tool and put the new cap on. It's a $10 experiment. if not, off to the dealer.

Anytime you get a CEL, you must use a scan tool to clear it. I've never heard of a CEL clearing on its own, unless its a domestic vehicle????

Gas cap codes usually clear on their own on most cars. It may be different for the Prius because it has a different EVAP system, like the Volt.

I believe its mainly domestic vehicles, I know the Toyota Camry CEL for gas cap stays on as well.

Here in NJ, they check your gas cap during inspection and they fail cars that don't even have CEL lights on, but they'll tell you the cap is bad.

The check engine light may need a few days to a week of normal driving before turning off. The on-board diagnostic has to run and pass three consecutive times to turn off the light. For most evap codes, that means at least 3 warm-up cycles. Cold start, drive until normal operating temp, park at least 5 hours, repeat two more times.

I've been under the impression that if you power cycle the car 3 times after the faulting condition has been resolved, the light will turn off. I think the computer may still store the code, however. The manual seems to agree, saying that the code will be stored after the lamp goes off, until the vehicle is driven 40 or more times.

That would make sense. I can't see going back to the dealer to get rid of a check engine light every time the gas cap is put on wrong.

Or stop in at the local auto parts store and use their code reader for free to read and clear the code.
