You have an excellent point, but I had a secondary goal as well, to see what the usable tank capacity is, and putting a gallon in would have obviated that goal.

I can now clearly say that my car has a 10 gallon usable range, and that tip of multiplying the indicated MPG by 10 is a good rule of thumb. Even though the Cons gauge in my car reads 5% aggressive, like it seems everyone's does, I have I'm sure an excess gallon of usable fuel in my tank when I use 10 as my usable fuel.

I may, however, use your thought when I go for the 600 mile tank (which I just might do now, I am holding at 60 mpg through 100 miles using the tips...)

Hmmmm wait a minute...would putting a spare gallon in the tank mean I cheated when accomplishing the 600 mile tank? o_O

What are the rules here on high mileage tanks?

I will tell you it is a hotly debated thing in the Vette 1/4 mile world...if someone has Nitrous on their car and they try to turn in a record time N/A, they get all sorts of trouble unless there is a trusted member willing to vouch that the bottle wasn't in the car...no cheating and it's too tempting to hit that button if you have it!

Is it the same if you add a gallon to the tank but then add the gallon to your fueling, then claiming you got a 600/700/800 mile tank?

That's precisely what I did with it, and planned to from the start. But I did check, the tank was spotless before I put it in.

I often use my truck for doubtful gas...it sucks so much fuel that when I blend old gas with new it's burned out in no time!

If I were the judge, I would accept putting up to 1.5 Gallons as a hedge against getting stuck in a bad area, but not driving farther than your current MPG reading from the point of the beep warning. :)

FYI for future endeavours, one gallon will not help. You'll need at least two gallons for the car to recognise that fuel is being put into the fuel tank. If you fill up with one gallon, the low fuel light will still be on.

That's ok that the low fuel light is on, but I'm assuming the car will start with only one gallon added.

Please advise if that assumption is incorrect. Thanks.

If you ran the car until it shuts off, no it won't start because it doesn't register anything less than 2 gallons added. (because the car still thinks it's low on fuel and hence the light is still on).

Oh....that is very salient information - and completely contrary to any other car I've ever driven which start if there's any fuel spitting out of the injectors or carb.

Thank you for posting this. I will carry 2 gallons when I try this, I happen to have a 2.5 gal can.

o_O Well, I would not classify facing death in the same category as potentially running out of gas...

but that said, yes, if I set a goal I do try to accomplish it!:)

Perhaps my analogy was a bit too extreme?

True but other cars don't have a battery or electric motor to protect. Yes a regular car will run until it is literally out of fuel. The Prius tends to have more safeguards (e.g. you can't blow the transmission because shifting into Reverse while travelling at 60mph will simply put the car in Neutral. Do not try it with a non shift-by-wire car!!)

Jon is correct. You'll need more than 1ga of fuel to restart the car.

As for the rules. You must run the 600 miles from start to finish with a "sealed" filler cap. I.e. you must not add any fuel until after you have reach 600 miles and have snapped the required photo. Obviously you can cheat but you know there is no honor in that. It's much the same as running a Sneaky Pete in a supposedly N/A race.

Glad he posted that 2 gal minimum information, I'd have been REALLY mad had I put in a gallon and it didn't start! If I'm close on this tank I'll tote a couple of gallons, not just one.

That makes perfect sense on the rules. If you added any fuel there would be no way to get an accurate answer.

I'm betting better at this....with my weekend errands around town I actually increased my mpg to 62.2 on 230 miles by paying attention to lights and whether they are stale green or red & coasting appropriately.

But I was mad when I had to jockey the Prius in my driveway to get the Vette out and the engine started. Any way to keep the engine from starting when it's cold? I didn't try EV mode but something tells me that won't work anyway...

I was gonna suggest EV Drive Mode lol.

Given that you're in FL, EV Drive Mode should work. You have to press it prior to the engine firing up. (So start the car, press the EV button and re-position the Prius on the driveway)

Put it in EV Mode immediately upon starting the car. That will allow you to move it in and out of the driveway.

I'll try that. I think I tried to put in EV mode while I was already moving with the engine running and it said not available.

Yeah once the warmup cycle is initiated, you won't be able to use EV Drive Mode until S2 is reached I believe. S3 for sure (but that's the 25km/h limit)
