I noticed that when I setmy c's cruise control it maintains the selected speed when traveling on flat surfaces and uphills but when proceeding downhills it just rolls freely down the hill picking up speed without decellerating (as did my bmw) to continue to maintain the set speed. I am for ed to apply my brakes to slowdown and than resetthe cruise control again. Has anyone else noticed this happening? Is there something wrong with my car?

You may have something wrong. Is it factory cc?
Mine applies the regen brake to maintain speed going downhill.
I use it all the time for extra charging.

Definitely something wrong. Mine will certainly use regen brakes to maintain speed. It has a limit to this - it won't use regen brakes fully and it will never use friction brakes - so it won't work on steeper hills (and eventually the speed will increase to a point that the cruise control fully disengages), but most of the time it should work.

Regen braking here as well... but you can override the regen with a little throttle to "glide".

My drivers ed car is a Scion XB (I will have to test this on the C though) that will do this as well. Even on the slightest hill, it doesn't even try and stay at the set speed.

Ok Toyota says that on cars like the priusC etc... (if it isnt a BMW, MBZ,LEXUS ETC) The cruise control woll not control the speed going down hill. So maybe they shjould not call it "cruise control" than???? How about they call it "Cruise Speed Semi-Control" Or "Semi-Cruise Control" or Sort Of Cruise Control

But the Prius C will control going down all but the extreme hill. The regen slows the car down by ramping up to full (if the hill is steep enough).

    1. You press the button on the end of the stalk to "arm" the cruise control. An indicator appears in the dash.
    2. When the car is travelling at the desired speed, you press the stalk down to set that speed. The word "SET" appears next to the indicator in the dash.
    3. Take your foot off the accelerator.

The car will then maintain speed. If it needs to accelerate, it will accelerate. If it needs to brake, it will use the regen brakes to brake. That means if you start going down a hill it will apply regen braking to keep to the speed that you set.

If your Prius c isn't doing this, then there is something wrong.

I have not ever experienced any other vehicle that had cruise control which could maintain speed on descent if the drag of an idling engine was not enough. I'm not saying it's not out there - but I've never experienced it. With any cruise control I've used on vehicles, they could always operate the throttle only and could never use the brakes.

The Prius' cruise control similarly can't use the traditional brakes on the vehicle, HOWEVER it can and does use the regen braking system. I don't feel that it will use the regen brakes as hard as they will go, but on slight to moderate declines, it seems to be able to happily use the regen brakes to maintain speed.

Well mine doesnt brake at all. It will fly down the hill and i will get a speeding ticket lol. I honestly dont know what to do if toyota service dept says the car does not maintain cruise control set speed while going down hill and thats what i am ecperiencing. i do know how to set the cruise control, that part is easy...as is applying the brakes :)

Where are you located? Maybe the US cars are different?
