Why is B mode any different than using the brakes?

B mode engages the gas engine to use its friction to waste energy to slow you down to avoid over-doing the regen on a long downhill when you have excess momentum to waste. Otherwise it wastes energy you want to use to keep your car moving.

No "B" mode in achieving the 49.3mpg.
