Low Rolling Resistance replacement tires: Current List

We noticed that the 2012 and 2013 Insights have the Ecopia EP 422s' ( T-rated ) . Keep the 422s' of '11 Fit ( 175/65-15 , H-rated ) and '08 Yaris sedan ( 185/60-15 , T -rated ) at 35 > 36 . Both are base models with an automatic . YARIS has got 38.5 , 39.4 , 40.3 , and 41.4 since their install . It's currently getting 41 .5 . Warmer temps and summer blend may be contributing as well . At $60+ tax each , can't complain .

 

You send me some petrol i'll send you some tyres.

Is the Kumho KH27 available in the US? The A rated tyres are only in the sizes and load/speed ratings I gave. All other KH27's are B or C rated, and nothing that is suitable gen2 with 16 inch rims.

Got the $100 VISA debit card from G.M. for the purchase of 4 BRIDGESTONE Ecopia 422s . Took little over a month to receive it . This is the current gas mileage . The Eco-Meter is reading around .5 less than the calculated F.E..

 

I got 3 of those when I bought my wheels & tires from America's Tire Company. I had 2 $100 ones & one $80 one.

I just had my best tank ever @ 55.9 mpg calculated!

 

'08 Yaris sedan w/ 4 speed auto got 42.34 ( 435.3 mis. / 10.28 gals. ) . Eco-Meter showed 41.4 , may need to reset to 96 , at 95 . Happy with that . Hopefully the m.p.g. will go up a bit more as the 422s' break in . Around 2.000 miles on them . The 43.4 is beginning of new tank . Could actually be 43.9 > 44.3 m.p.g.. Wish we still had the '07 Prius with these tires .

 

I take it that you have the 422's . If so, that's great . Keep us up to date with their performance and F.E. gain . Thanks

 

We'd have gone with the Energy Saver A/S , but not available for the '11 FIT or '08 Yaris .

What a misleading ad! We all know ES is a good tire but their ad department had just lost some points. They should have compared to the Ecopia 422 instead of picking on the Turanza (not really LRR) and EP100 (Summer LRR) on their weak points.

I've seen many threads on Gen2 owners up sizing their tires to OE Gen3 sizes. Any Gen3 owners up sized their tire? Would a 215/50-17 work for Gen3 17s? Total Diameter is 0.5 in more than OE 15"
F8L - this is your fault for getting my hopes up on the ES

 

That size would make your oddo under read by 2% and your speedo would be more accurate. The tyres will have no clearance problems.

I figured as much, I've seen many going with 205/50-17 but none did 215/50-17. I guess for FE, 215 would not make sense. I'm happy with the MXM4 right now, by the time I need new tires, I believe more LRR choices would be available

 

As you can tell by my avatar I'm in the UK and all gen2 Prius come with 16 inch rims, OEM tyre size 195/55/16.

I run 205/55/16 to great advantage in all respects, but for the oddo under read by 2.8% "no big deal".

I have tried 215/50/16s and 215/50/17s "borrowed from a friend", but did not like the ride or the millage hit although the last point is not really valid as they were not LRR tyres.

I'm not worry about the odometer at all and I have my GPS for my speedometer. 2-3% at 100K won't affect vehicle $ at all and mpg calculations are easily compensated. FE is icing on the cake, dry/wet traction, road noise, and ride comfort are my priorities. I am always interested however, on new tires that claims to have it all

I am still getting used to owning a hybrid sedan with very limited performance accessories to choose from. I believe that is the reason I focus on tires so much. When I take a step back and look at the big picture, the increase or decrease in FE throughout the length of time I keep the car (around 100k miles) really doesn't calculate into much $ gained or lost (+/- 1%-2%=1,000-2,000 miles=2-4 tanks of gas.)

 

The MFD MPG readout becomes very accurate when going up in tyre size, it is usually optimistic but the larger diameter compensates for this. In my case the car gave a MPG reading about 3% higher than calculated, but with tyres 2.8% larger now gives the reading within 0.2%.

Maybe the engineers were debating on tire sizes for the Prius and had a last minute change of heart, so they kept the MPG programming for the larger tire

 

I went on the ES website and saw the 215/50, but since FE would be the reason to get the ES, the 215 would not make sense
