In a more serious note, one of the more astonishing Scottish engineering accomplishments was the design and construction of the Bell Rock Lighthouse. Built on a submerged rock in the North Atlantic when "safety standards" did not exist, it still is in operation 200 years later. 123 block totaling 104 tons put together in a brilliant round interlocking jigsaw puzzle. The part that amazed me was only two lives were lost in the construction. This included a immensely powerful storm of 3 days and 80 foot waves destroyed nearly all the housing built above the submerged rock, yet all 17 workers survived since the foundation of the housing was made out of huge timbers. Completing such a dangerous project, in a dangerous area, in such nasty conditions, of such outstanding design is truly impressive.
