My Prius has a completely dead ev battery and I can't afford a new one. I'm wanting to sell it. I'm wondering how much I could expect to get for it

Does your Prius not have 8 years and 160 thousand miles warranty on the hybrid system? H

He does not give us anywhere near enough info to guess what country he is in, or what warranty applies.

BTW, 160,000 km is almost equal to 100,000 miles, could this be confusing you?

    Mike,

You are in the state with one of the best if not the best suppliers of rebuilt Prii batteries, Re-Involt.

    Remanufactured Hybrid Vehicle Battery Packs

They can put a new battery in your car for under $2,000 and as long as everything else is in good condition your car may last another 7 years or 111,000 miles. My Ema is pushing 340K and still on the original battery. You may not get much more for your car than that without a rebuilt battery and certainly can't find a new car that cheap, lol.

    Happy driving,
    Chris

    Mike,

I too recommend you get ReInvolt to fix your Prius. If you were to sell the Prius in the condition it is, you won't get a lot for it. Unless you can just walk away from it and have another vehicle to drive, you will still need to replace the Prius.

ReInvolt is the leader in the industry for the packs. If you cannot afford that, try to find a salvage pack from a scrap yard and have it put in. There are no guarantees at the junk yard. ReInvolt does guarantee their product.

    Best of luck to you.

Yeah none of these are options. I owe alot of money on the car. Can't affor to fix it and can't afford another car. Getting what I can for it is my only option

Go on to the web and google "autobytel." They have a section on their website where you can get a guaranteed sale price. You will need to enter in all of the details on your 2006 Prius. A number will pop up which is a number they will pay for your vehicle. They are owned by the Manheim auto group of nationwide auctions. The number they provide you is determined by a up to the minute of what is selling nationwide for your vehicle at auctions.

I was curious the other day and did my 2005 Prius! It might be helpful. Good luck!

Can you tell us the symptoms, just to be sure? Are you on the original 12 volt battery? What are the DTCs?

For all we know, it could just be a bad 12 volt since an 06 at this point will certainly need a new one.

If you know some about electronics, you could possibly determine which cell is bad in the battery pack by measuring the voltages of all the cells. Then you could purchase replacement cells and swap the bad cells for the good. That might get the pack working again for a little while. Most rebuilders carry the process further by balancing all of the cells which involves using a specific charger that is designed for that purpose. Also a lot of times the pack fails due to corrosion on the connectors and the bus bar inside the pack. If you know someone who can hook up a good scanner that will read the pack and get the DTC for the pack, that will help in narrowing down which cells are bad. The Prius battery consists of quite a few of individual batteries that are all tied together. When the packs fail, usually what is found is one or two individual cells have fallen below spec while all the other cells are fine. The cells are available online on Ebay. Also a few folks here on PC have done the job and reported success. Word of warning - the pack is well over 200 volts DC so if you do work on it, be very careful. Pull the orange safety plug before you do anything.

Before you give up on the Prius altogether take the time to talk to the folks at ReInvolt and see if maybe they can swap cells for you at a reduced price. Also, there is a place that is well regarded called AutoBeYours Plug In Hybrid Electric Vehicle PHEV. I think they are in Indiana. They might be able to get you a pack a little cheaper than ReInvolt.

I understand that your budget is very limited. In the end though you should come out ahead if you make the repair rather than dumping the car altogether. Since you owe money on the car there will be liabilities there also that you will have to deal with.

There are alternatives out there. Take some time to do some research before you take a loss. You may find that it won't take a lot to get it back on the road with a temporary fix that will hold you until you have the funds to make a proper repair.

Mike the dealers are only interested in making money from you.

The ev battery is actually not one battery but 28 batteries in a chain called modules. They are all the same as each other, but if one goes bad the chain is broken and the whole thing does not work properly.

The battery is working to some degree as this is what starts the engine. With a little work it may be possible that a $25/30 replacement battery (module) could get you back on the road or greatly enhance the sale price. There is lots of help on this forum just think about it.

As stated by both myself and John above, the Prius traction battery consists of quite a few individual cells or batteries. It is not one big battery.

Take a look at this link.

    http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/500/medium/PHEV_002.jpg

It will give you an idea of what is really there. Furthermore, I agree that the dealers are trying to make money from you. There are alternatives involved, and research into the subject can and will save you a lot of money. Your Prius is worth a lot more in operating condition than it would be in non operating condition.

Do you have a receipt that lists the DTCs? Is the battery fan running on full most of the time?

Is the acceleration degraded? Does it look like the state of charge is rapidly jumping between near "empty" and near "full"?

Failed traction (HV) battery, what to do? - Prius Wiki is a summary of possible actions.

If not, please run the test at Weird stuff happening? MPGs dropping? Test The Battery | PriusChat after the car has sat MANY hours or overnight (or you can use a voltmeter). Please tell us the 3 values (not just 1). Don't go changing the 12 volt battery first until you tell us the values...

If you have HIDs, you can avoid unnecessary cycles on the lights by toggling between off and parking light positions.

Weird stuff can start happening w/a low or bad 12 volt. Don't waste $ on having a dealer "test" the 12 volt (07 Prius Dead - Any Guesses? | PriusChat). If you're on the original 12 volt, it's at end of life now.

I do not recommend you try to replace individual cells, as I don't have a good feeling you respect the lethal voltage that are present, but let's pretend you really understand and fear the HV Battery. There will be 28 modules of 7.2 volt batteries, except at least one is not going to show 7.2 volts on your volt meter. (Do not already own a volt meter? Perhaps this is not your best time to be learning)

Search will be your friend as many much wiser than myself have done all the research they could.
