I was thinking 'test mule'. New drivetrain in old body.
Or, just a red herring. :p

fwiw, if that is a recent shot and that is all the further they are...maybe the next gen is going to be 2016? or maybe a fairly late release 2015?

I'm trying to figure out how a car would be 'caught perusing', that is carefully
reading or examining, a highway… the driver might do so, but not the car.

It could be a failed attempt at word play with the first word, 'spied.'

But then peruse is a strange word with two seemingly contradictory meanings,
neither one of which works in context:

    peruse - vb
    1. to read or examine with care
    2. to browse or read through in a leisurely way

And then there's '...We Think.' Are they thinking its a 2015 Toyota Prius, or are
they thinking about the correctness of 'perusing?'

A word that makes sense and at least sounds like 'perusing' would be 'cruiseing.'

This is not the first time I have spotted autos like this here in SoCAl! They throw those slab sides to completely distort what other drivers see. It could be old body stuck on 2015 frame, drive train, and engine under those panels and it was out for a test run, or burgers! If I spot it, you can bet I am going to be tailing it and shooting some pics myself!!!
New Auto Paparazzi. They are apparently out there!
Having a camera is handy for those quick freeway moments, I always have one ready. point and shoot!
    SAFELY!!!

Interesting... Thanks for the reminder about the Lexus CT dash. I wonder if this is an old recycled shot or if this is a test vehicle for the the another Lexus hybrid, the next Lexus CT or if this is the direction the next Prius is going. If If it's the last option, it's interesting it has round gauges w/needles.

The silver knob is also out of place vs. the CT.

Maybe they merged the current models; the inside of a CT200, and the exterior of the GenIII Prius, draped it, and just started driving around as a test to see if it would make its way into media and this forum in order to tease and confuse us and to find out what we'd say. Just for the fun of it.

Seriously, it makes no sense to put the standard ct200 dash into a Prius. If that's all they're doing for a 2015 model, then I think I'll pass.

Hopefully Toyota has done more than that with styling.

Styling! Care for the front end of this unrelated picture?
Wouldn't mind something like this closed front grill with lower air inlet at all if it lowers to a drag coefficient of < 0.25.

Looks like a car with a small mouth and sheepish grin.

dual-link MacPherson struts I think. (I recall they're MacPherson's all around). A double wishbone setup would be fun... lol.

Umm... I hope you guys realise that this test mule is more likely than not a powertrain test mule. Manufacturers will use current bodyshell cause you can't exactly drive around in a chassis. When Subaru was testing the BR-Z, it used a Legacy bodyshell and then a chopped Impreza bodyshell.

This is why I wouldn't put too much faith into the exterior or interior design (which basically looks like a Gen 3.5 body with a modified CT200h dashboard).

If Toyota does go to a more standard center console in 4th gen, may they avoid the too-wide center console that juts into legroom found in CT200h. Too wide for a small car: See narrows space between 4 o'clock steering wheel and console wall:

If Toyota goes to a regular combination meter layout for the next Gen, it'll lose its "Prius-ness". I'm thinking it also allows for a lower dashboard if the instrument panel is up where it is now, at the base of the windshield.

I found the CT's driving position ok. Didn't notice anything that bugged me but I don't think I'm as tall as you.

Powertrain. Subaru did that with the BR-Z. They used a Legacy bodyshell when they were testing the BR-Z's powertrain components.

The thing is, Toyota typically uses their engines for 2 generations (10 years ish) so that makes me think that the next gen Prius will continue with the 1.8 litre engine setup. So what are they testing? If the MT article was right, it could be the next gen HSD system or maybe the rumoured AWD system (though you'd think they'll test that elsewhere and not SoCal).

My money's on the next gen HSD. (e.g. battery, PSD, inverter, MGs)

All I know is I need a place to rest my right leg while driving. I can get that on the floating bridge. If there had been a place to rest my right leg in 2nd gen, I might have kept the car, but it would have taken some modification to the OEM console stuff.

Toyota: Do not go back to a totally open center console area like 2nd gen !!!

although it's sort of a moot point cause pretty sure already bought my last Prius.
