UPDATE to Low Price Alternative to Prius Keys 2004 - 2009 years only

    Just wanted to share my experience. I ordered my key from Ovni on Monday and he shipped same day. I received the key today and programmed in few minutes following his instructions. I took the key to Lowes for them to cut it but they declined to cut it as I was told their machines can only cut keys that is sold in their stores. Then I took the key to a mom and pop key shop and they cut it within seconds and they charged me $6. The key works perfectly now. I highly suggest ordering from Ovni if you are missing a second key.

    How much are the genuine key fob's worth in the U.S.? I'll admit it's a handy low cost alternative if you need an emergency key or backup for programming but other than that I'd rather have the genuine one for central locking capabilities. Depends on the cost of the genuine items over there I guess. Still handy nonetheless.

    Gavin... You can get a used Black logo or Silver logo key for about $50 to $90. Depends on condition. Those keys will do the same as mine. Most of my local customers buy my key to hide inside or outside of the car.
    Why pay almost twice as much for a key that's going to be used for an emergency only. Hopefully it never needs to be used.
    I hide mine inside the car. I have AAA and they can come along and open my door if I ever lose my smart key.

    What good is having a backup key sitting at home??
    Example...I drive to another state and lose my key. I have to call someone at my house(if someone is there) or get a neighbor to break into my house....have them mail me my spare key. If no one can get me my spare...I have two options..Locksmith or local dealer. They would need to RESET the car to accept new keys. Easily $400+ Guess what surprise you'll get when you get home??? Your spare key(s) will no longer work!!!! When you reset the computer, you delete all keys programmed to it. All your spare key(s) you have at home will be useless.

    Caution when using spare key: After you power off the car, remember to push your finger into key slot to release it or the car can still be turned on again w/o a key.

    I ordered a key from Ovni. It arrived within a couple of days and I was able to program it using the video without much trouble. I took the key to the Home Depot and they cut it to match my original and because I had supplied the blank, there was no charge. This transaction saved me hundreds of dollars.

    Got my key from ovni today and programmed it ...works great!

    Remember:
    You have to hold key in slot while programming or it will just pop back out.

    Key is loose in slot, not snug like a fob. (Hold it in there and keep it still)

    As ovni says it takes almost a minute to program-be patient.

    Once the car starts you can pull the key out.

    When you power off the car push your finger in the slot to complete the power off process. (thx TampaPrius)
    -if you forget this part, you'll hear a chime when you open the door and your fob won't work!

    I'm not risking a $37 oopsie from the part-timer standing closest to the key machine at Home Depot/Lowes.
    I'll get it cut a locksmith shop.

    I had one customer mention their locksmith having a small issue cutting the key. They were able to cut it but had to adjust their machine a bit due to my blade being slightly different. I measured the emergency key and my blade and they were a hair different in size. Not visually noticeable.

    I have upgraded to a better key and the key blade is now 100% identical to the emergency key. New key is also of a hard rubber material like OEM Toyota key and not a hard plastic.

    In order to program key and start car, the chip slot must be facing left(driver side).

    How many of these can be programmed to a single car?

    Also if you owned 2 Prii, could you program the key to both cars?

    The Prius will accept up to 5 keys total. When you buy the car new, two of those 5 spots are taken. The only way to get back the 5 slots is to reset the immobilizer ecu. To answer your question is if you have never added keys, you will have three unique encryption slots left.

    The chip I programmed in the key has a fixed encryption. Can be programmed to several cars at the same time. The car is the one accepting the new encryption, key is in no way changing.

    Ordered my key from ovni at 5:01pm EST. at 5:04, received shipping notification!
    I have always only had my one SKS fob, which has made me a little uneasy at times. It will be a nice peace of mind to have a cheap backup.

    That's great Ovni. I had a regular metal key cut years ago and it's in a metal hide-away under the car. It opens the door fine. But I never realized the rfid was in that key thought it was in the fob itself. This is great stuff Ovni!

    Since the key is RFID can you wrap it in aluminum foil stick it in the classic metal Hide-Away case under the car and then the car's rfid not able to communicate with it? Constant rfid is not good for the 12 volt battery. I believe it times out but still not good.

    If it can be made to be quiet with the rfid in stow you got a serious winner here sir.

    The rfid chip is in the smart fob. NOT inside the emergency key. The rfid chip is only inside the key I make.
