I've seen alot of threads from several Prius owners who have gone through elaborate steps to fix the amazingly annoying, constant reverse beep. People are buying equipment and even writing code on laptops. Here's the thing: It's in the owner's manual! For a 2013 it's on page 602. This is a feature that can be easily changed from a constant beep to one single beep. It's not set to be changed by the owner, but by the dealership. When I bought the car about a month ago, I asked about turning it off. Our salesperson said, "Oh no, we can't do that. It would be disabling a safety feature." If she had known that changing it to one beep is an option in the stinking owner's manual, I would have gladly opted for that and gotten it done that day. Either way, I called their service department and explained it to them. They said, "No problem" and made an appointment. I took it in today and they did it in 5 minutes for free!
Anyhow, if anyone out there is getting hassled by your service department as to whether or not they are allowed to do it, show them the owner's manual!

I couldn't stand the continuous reverse beep and got it changed at the dealer service department within a week of ownership. I didn't have to show the owner's manual, but I was ready with it anyway. They said they normally charge $50 to change the beep, but did it for me as a courtesy since I took it to the service department of the dealership where I purchased the car. It depends on the service salesperson you get I guess.

I find it amusing that having a beep that only sounds inside the car is in some way a safety feature. After 36 years of driving I finally have a car that lets me know I've selected reverse, however did I manage before lol.

Thanks to priuschat i knew of this procedure and had my dealer disable the reverse beep before taking delivery of my new v. Simple fix as you say and i would be wary of any dealership that charges money for this service. If you didn't get it done before delivery of your new prius i would have them do it at your next service, that way they have the car already in the shop so no excuse to charge you extra money to disable the beep.

I would love to hear Toyota's explanation on this "feature".
Couple of ideas: Could be because of the unusual "gearshift" on the dash that could confuse people new to the prius family, or the quietness of the drivetrain, theres no "clunking" into gear that lets you know your in reverse like a normal car. Though, being one of those "new" people it only took me a couple of test drives to sort it out and get used to it. Only problem I have now is when driving a "normal car" I'm always looking for the park button.

Amen brother! One of the reasons I bought a scan gauge was to disable the constant beep.

Exactly! My wife and I said the same thing. I could almost understand it if the beep were audible outside of the car to alert pedestrians in parking lots because the car is so silent. But to have that constant annoying beep inside is just ridiculous. We just went for our first drive in the Prius together since getting it done today and when I put the car in reverse my wife said, "Oh thank God".

Not sure what Toyota was thinking on the reverse beep thing, the beeping truly is from the devil.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that disabling the reverse beep takes some divine intervention. Thank God? And Toyota, when engineering this feature into the Prius, I'm sure, wasn't saying, " The Devil made me do it".

I actually like the reverse beep.

    I know...I'm weird.

I don't understand why it seems to bother so many people so much. How much time are you guys spending driving around in reverse?

Yeah, I'm getting old and I'm Pavlov's dog here, but I kind of like the constant auditory reminder that I've actually got the vehicle in reverse.

The Prius is primarily my wife's car and she hated the beep. I don't think it alone is a big deal, but if you have the radio on too or if you're on a call over Bluetooth, it gets to be just more noise.

Me too. Mainly because I trust my car and not myself. Two days after buying the car, I almost ran through the garage wall, before I realized that the beepin' in missin' and applied breaks.

Just got mine done @ the dealer, a 15mins waiting and no charge.
Really glad the continuous beeps went away, I can settle with one beep when backing up.

I was happy to spend $15 for the OBD2 interface and 10min in my driveway with my laptop to disable it myself rather than a 30 drive to the dealer- 30-60min wait for the service then a 30 min drive back home.

For many here- a trip to the dealership is a major inconvenience and I for one avoid them whenever I can.

FWIW- I had one simple request for the dealer when I purchased my Plug-in Prius... please have it charged on Saturday when I pick it up. I was told "sure- no problem". When I picked up the car- the EV battery had no EV miles left on it. I asked why didn't they charge it? The reply was "we couldn't find any place to plug it in!". The Plug-in Prius can charge off a common 110v ac outlet found in every single house and business in the US but they couldn't find one to plug in to!

    ny_rob,
I see your point. I didn't really think about people who live a long way from their dealership. I should have, because I've bought cars before from dealers that were a long distance from my house. I just happened to be lucky this time in that my Toyota dealer is 10 minutes away and they did it for free in 10 minutes.

That's ridiculous about your dealer not charging your car when you had asked them to. No excuse for that.

I took mine to the dealer and now only have one beep.also i have no need to have the lights stay on for 20 sec.or so after i park. Now no beep and when i stop and open the door the lights go off.No charge from dealer.I live in Lexington,Ky and for years i have gone to Toyota on Nicholasville and they treat me like family.I have never had any problems with them.I strongly recommend them to everyone.

Anyone install a proximity beep. Now that would be useful!
