i'm still thinking b mode, but don't use neutral as some may suggest.

I found 2 chooses for a replacement battery: Exide FP-AG51JIS 4 year replacement and optima DS46B24R 3 year replacement and the optima is sealed. What would happen to the optima, exide( vented) if the atl was to start overcharging

you must be the only person to get a non agm from the factory. that should be covered under a safety defect.

here's what i'm thinking: 2010 on lot, dealer leaves something on and kills the battery, lot monkey replaces it with wrong type.

Very plausible. Non-AGM battery makes me very suspicious...

i don't know if that's the correct number, but optima gets a lot of respect around here. or, you can pick up an oem from a dealer, sometimes at a discount.

I don't know if we are being trolled here, but I do not believe non-AGM is not a safe battery alternative for a USA Prius. At least for Gen2, we are driving with the 12v basically in the car with us in the air we are breathing. Regular (non-AGM) 12v batts make more gases H2 etc. that would not be acceptable in the living space of the car. Also there is always the possibility of sulfuric acid leak if the non-AGM battery leaks due to breach of plastic housing container. If the dealer put a regular 12v in this car then this owner could be due quite a lot of money from the dealr to repair the damage, I would think, if it could be proven.

Well, AGM or non-AGM would work the same as both are vented to the outside. But it IS an AGM battery in spite of what the OP thinks. He added too much water (obviously as it was coming out), refuses to believe us so I'm letting him sit in his own exhaust!

After doing some checking the battery is a AGM ( SORRY) and I may have added to much water thinking that the battery fluid was so low that if I add water up to the (like a lead acid battery) marks in the cells(not to the top) this is ok.
I have done this before and not had a problem since 2010.

The 2010 Prius User's Manual, page 412, says that the 12V battery is Maintenance-free.

OK Zander thank you for the clarification. It is understandable mistake and seems like Toyota ought to say more in the op manual the 12v battery details (maybe they give more info in Gen3 manual). The Gen2 op manual says just about nothing about the AGM nature of the 12v.

The AGM batt has a small H2 gas vent plastic tube, which when you filled batt with water, probably the acidic liquids burped thru that line. Probably what happened you reduced the acid concentration inside the battery...that made it want to create more H2 to get the charge back, so the extra H2 would tend to expel the liquid thru the tube.

So the bottom line, we need AGM 12v batt in a Prius (for safety reasons: it is in the living space). AGM batts are (1) maintenance-free and have two safety advantages: (2) greatly reduced H2 generation, and (3) greatly reduced (almost no) potential to leak acid.

You don't make any mention of neutralizing the acid's corrosive activity in your posts. Make a solution of baking soda and water and get a cheap paintbrush and put it liberally on all the areas where there are signs of corrosion.
This will make a bubbly blue-green mess but once neutralized you can wash it off with plain water. Keep brushing it on 'til the bubbling stops.

Good luck and I hope you get it sorted.

    Cheers,

AGM batteries do not ports to add water. How do you manage to open it up?
Can you show a picture of the battery?

Get electrical system checked out, (for a santy check). Also replace batt w/ AGM.

others have added water and claimed it revitalized a weak battery. i guess you can pry the caps off. maint. free just means planned obsolescence.
