I think Chrysler is taking the battle on, all or nothing. If Chrysler recalled newer vehicles then they are admitting to a safety issue. It would be difficult to argue there is no safety issue with the older models if the newer models get the recall.

Other than on TV (top gear) and magazines I have yet to see a caprice in person. I'm not sure if they have been released yet. Tons of police tauruses and explorers around.

I haven't seen any Holden-built Caprices as cop cars in person yet. It's mostly Crown Vics for my city and area. I've some cops in SUVs, mostly Ford Explorers and Expeditions, IIRC. It seems the Santa Clara County Sheriffs tend to have SUVs.

When I last lived in WA state (left in mid 2011), some of the agencies were adopting Dodge Chargers.

I unfortunately haven't traveled much in the US since late 2010. :( Last notable trip was down to So Cal late last year.

That's from the Wikipedia article I linked earlier.
If you want to dig through 56 pages of some dry reading, here is the study that it is referencing.

Weren't the cars legal at the time? How can you retrospectively change the rules? Oh hang on, Chrysler is now owned by a foreign company and you can't have that.

Protectionism again, just like the Toyota debacle a few years ago when Toyota became number 1.

I was thinking that, and I agree you can't go and change the rules 7 to 20 years after.

Politics aside, the argument for the recall is that these Jeeps are more prone to tank rupture than other cars of the era.

I don't politics has much to play in this. At least not it being foreign owned. Many still see Chrysler as a domestic, and Fiat still has to pay off the government guaranteed loans. I'm sure there is some, like with the Volt battery fire in crash testing. It had a part in Toyota's troubles, but the drama and publicity of the 911 call had a part too. The Hindenburg wasn't the worse zeppelin disaster, but it is the one that was recorded on video and audio.

But I thought it was ELECTRIC cars that were dangerous and burst into flames the moment you looked at them? :censored:

Cool so when you get rear ended the hitch will puncture the tank, ensuring a fire. Shows how bogus the nhtsa is.
