I noticed recently that my 2010 Prius is burning a lot of engine oil. Had the oil consumption test done. Everything normal according to a dealer. To me over one quart of oil per 600 miles is rather excessive. What is your experience with oil consumption?

What type/weight oil are you using? What area of the country, type of temps, topography? I assume you have checked to make sure there are no leaks. How do you drive, high revs? How many miles on the car?

Toyota recomended oil 0-20. We are in SoCal. Driving to work avg 70 miles per hour. There are no leaks, engine just started burning oil. First I noticed warning light " low engine oil level" when making turns. When I checked oil level was only at the begining of the dipstick. Car has 130000 miles because we drive 150 miles to and from work.

I have 112,000 miles. I would say my driving style is average to conservative with a mix of town and country driving. I used Mobile 1 0w20 and used 1 qt per 7k in my mild temps mid Atlantic coastal area. I have since changed to 0w30 and expect less oil consumption and it is a bit quieter.

No doubt 1qt per 600 miles is excessive. A lesser grade/quality oil may have more consumption. I'm no mechanic and there may be several reasons for excessive oil use but most are not good. With that much oil use I think there would be some exhaust smoke at start up or acceleration. If you are certain there are no leaks and the oil checks are after the car has been sitting, preferably before starting in the morning, I would change oils to see what difference it makes.

Actually it's over 1 qt per 600 miles and Toyota service advisors told me that this is normal. I stil can't get over this. He even claims that car manual has this info.
My mechanic also advise me to change oil to 10- 30 and use some kind of additives so I'll try and see what happens.

May be some gasket leak. Monitor it and think about a second opinion from another dealer.

I don't see anything unusual comming from exhaust pipe but there is a black residue inside.

hopefully a mechanic will chime in

Could be the gas is not burning properly. I'm not a mechanic. Was the car spark plugs replaced recently a major tune up? Did the mechanic do a compression check?

High mileage Prius do burn oil up to a quart every 600 miles.

    Some stuff

Using thicker oil so as to prevent oil burning is only good to a point. Too thick and it can't move through the engine and lubricate as intended. Then more damage. Your mechanic sounds clueless. I would get a second opinion. Also this much oil use I would guess will likely clog the catalytic converter.

According to page 369 of the '08 manual the maximum oil consumption is 1.1 qt/600 miles. That seems insanely high. Again this is the maximum that Toyota recommends. The manual also states you should contact your toyota dealer if the vehicle consumes more than this amount

You said you have 130,000 miles. Did you do your 120,000 Mile Major tune up? That is the tune up and replace spark plugs?

Yes. I got 120,000 miles service, spark plugs replaced. After that my milage went down which I found interesting. Thousand miles later is back to normal around 45 mil per gal.
