10x displayed MPG til empty?

    Back in the Gen3 a great rule of thumb was to go 10 times the displayed MPG for the tank in miles until empty. So, if you had done 60 mpg for the duration of the tank then you could safely go 600 miles until you should fill up.

    So my question is, does this rule still work on the PiP? My guess is that it definitely should but just wanted to make sure to be safe.

    Depends on how and where you drive with the PiP. The fuel tank is smaller, but you can stretch it out if you plug in a lot.

    PiP tank is 10.6 gallons. Just go to 8 gallons, so do 8x rule.

    I'm pretty lucky then. I think I was using the 10x rule on the way home from buying it. Eek

    i always use the 10x rule in the PiP. Never fails. 33K miles.
    Same for our Gen 2. 150K miles. Never fails.

    I do most of my electric driving on my off days/ weekends. Its funny how I can delay filling up at the end of my work week because I'll be driving in EV mode mostly and my mileage (and tank range) will be Increasing, I've driven around on a practically empty tank for days, when im not making the daily compute. just watching the 10x rule.

    The Pip is so versitle. On a single tank of gas, We drove from North Atlanta to Ft. Walton Beach, drove around all week in EV mode because the condo parking garage had plugs on every level, and drove back home at the end of the week, stopping for gas the first time all week about 100 miles from home. 70MPG average for the vacation week. I just used the 10x avg MPG rule to know when to fill up.
    Another family member was filling up the Tahoe every 2-3 days it seems like.

    Do you fill past the first click?

    I pump 10.5 to 10.6 gallons with the 10X rule.
    I figure with a 9X rule with the PIP, it would use 9.45 to 9.54g leaving a little over a gallon of gas left.

    I try to keep the tank at least half full. If we have a prolonged wide area power outage, we will not be able to rely on the plug to extend our range. And gas stations cannot pump. So that's 4 gallons of reserve.

    This is just good disaster preparedness.

    So it sounds like I'd be plenty safe using a 9x rule or even a 9.5x rule if I'm feeling wily.

    If I had a PIP I would not exceed 9X.

    With a range variance of over 300 miles, there no possible way to apply any type of X rule.

    Sometimes I'm in the 600's. Sometimes 700's. A few times 800's and 900's. On vacation escapes with the cargo loaded and bikes on back, it only the 400's.

    Fill up when the last pip blinks, which is very accurately predicted by the miles-remaining estimate.

    Usually agree with everything you have to say, but I highly disagree with this one. The x rule is simply a function of knowing how much gas you have used in the tank. It is the exact same as what the car uses to determine number of pips and the DTE number. It is simply going farther because there is always a known amount of gas in the tank after the DTE says 0.

    Since it doesn't take into account the extreme variance the plug brings, how can it be accurate?

    In other words, unless you actually drive the same route the same way, never take advantage of plugging opportunities, and follow a strict routine on the weekend, results will vary by quite a bit.

    My per-tank distance varies by several hundred miles.

    I thought you were only talking about gas mile per gas gallon. If you EV miles are included, the range could be quite huge.

    If you want to do a formula, it would not be as simple. Say, your total 600 miles tank has 33% EV ratio (200 EV / 400 HV), 400 gas miles with 8 gallon of gas and 200 miles on electricity. The formula would be.

    8 gallons x 50 MPG / 0.66 (HV ratio)

    Any such rule only makes sense on a long trip with very little or no EV. I hit 3000 miles on a tank a while ago.
    My current tank has about 400 miles and I have 9 gallons left.

    Makes sense.

    So it sounds like you couldn't come up with a formula using the displayed MPG reading, at least none I can think of. Unless you can come up with something using just the number of HV miles?

    Watching HV mode utilize plug-supplied electricity reveals how messy the situation. After all, when you're driving along through the burbs with the A/C on, wouldn't you want to take advantage of that battery even if the engine runs from time to time?

    In order for the 10x rule to work, one must reset a trip meter at each fill up, and rely on that trip meter CONS average for their tank range calculation.
    It doesn't matter what your HV/EV ratio is, or anything else, 10 x the displayed CONSumption average is your tank range.
    The more Ev you use the higher the average and the longer your range, and vise-versa.
    Sometimes I have a 750 mile tank range because I'm getting 75 MPG average (lots of EV),
    Sometimes I have a 590 mile tank range because I,m getting 59 MPG AVERGE ( little EV). Whatever that's how it works .

    That's right. If PiP displays 100 MPG, I should get 1,000 miles per tank (using 10 gallons). 0.6 gallon on reserve is very low.

    Whenever the last gas gauge pip blinks, I can only fill up 8 gallons. So I thought 8x is better. 9x is pushing it as you'll have 1.6 gallons on reserve.

    This is what I'm trying to say. It doesn't matter what your ev ratio is. The x rule would still work the same.
