EV up & down, seasonal effect

    When asked about mileage, I use my lifetime gallons divided by miles and KWh used to go those 80 miles. Currently I say that every 80 miles I use 1 gallon of gas and about 7KWh of electricity.

    14.8 miles this morning at 63 degrees. Highest displayed. Car still travels the same 11-12 miles EV. No actual distance change beyond normal fluctuations, just a display change.

    How much does it say you have left after the 11-12 miles?

    Also, I think the average it uses goes back quite a few miles, thought someone said 50 miles but I think it has to be a lot more than that. The last 2-3 trips I've been doing 18-19 miles EV but my display still says around 12 when I turn it on at first.

    That was just observation, hoping to identify a pattern.

    Yesterday morning, my EV estimate was at 12.4 miles. Then I drove 156 miles (overall average with 2 charges came to 68 MPG). This morning, the estimate had climbed to 12.8 miles. Clearly, there's more being taken into consideration than just recent distance.

    In the morning, I run EV from my garage until it automatically switches over to HV. I usually get between 11 & 12 miles. In the winter, it was low 11's. I've notice now it is high 11's but still within daily fluctuations. I can't say for sure I'm getting more range.

    In the afternoon, I switch back and forth between HV and EV depending on traffic. There's none in the morning. That's why I straight shot use it up. I don't know how much EV miles I get in the afternoon. 14 to 20 miles is what I estimate.

    The EV "guesstimate" jumped to 14.8 miles because I took my car over to Half Moon Bay last weekend. The drive goes over a steep mountain and I regenerated about 6 miles of EV on the downhill portions. I probably drove about 20 miles EV that day. It apparently counts for the EV range display. That's why I have an artificially high EV display.

    EV start range today 16.3 EV estimate. Never thought I would be able to get to 20 miles of EV. Sorry about the large size of photo! 052 June 10 2013.JPG My regular route from my house and back home all in town 25-30mph roads. .1 of EV left. 73 degrees f. :)

    I purchased my Advanced PIP in November so this is the first time I'm actually able consistency use all EV mode without having the ICE come on. In the North East (Connecticut) I was getting a max of 9.6 during the cold winter. Gradually the estimated range has been going up and now I'm at 11. I'm hoping to get even more estimated range as it gets warmer (assuming I don't have to use the AC!)

    What I have noticed is that I was able to get more range when I was able to beat the range estimate. For example, before I leave the house I reset the Trip B (for the love of God, don't accidentally reset the coveted Trip A) and track the miles left on the EV range vs what I actually drove.
    • For the times when I drove MORE miles than my EV range, the next charge my range was about .1, .2 more miles. For example my range today was 10.8. I actually drove 12 miles and my range went up to 11.0
    • For the times when I ran out of EV and it was below my estimated EV range, the next charge cycle was either the same or slightly less.
    I wish we knew the algorithm, but here are the factors that seem to make up the estimated range:
    • 50% Temperature. If you drove exactly the same and simply had the ambient temperature go from 60-80 you would notice an increase in estimated range
    • 25% Driving Style: If you are slamming the pedal and even going as far as activating the ICE, I'm sure this will hurt your range. However, if you are constantly going no more than 50% of the max power, I doubt this makes much of a difference to anyone changing their driving style to increase estimated range. I literally crawled around town without any noticeable difference in range for the next charging cycle.
    • 25% Hills: The more you drive up hill, obviously the more the car needs to do. Conversely, going down hills only increases your range because of regenerative braking.
    • 0% ICE trips: This does not seem to matter at all. You won't be penalized if you drove 10 miles on EV and then 100 on HV.
    • 0% EV mode in HV: If you deplete your EV range, ICE kicks on and then after it warms up you drove 2 more miles in that weird EV but in HV state, your range won't increase. I tried it a few times and nothing changed

    Not sure if you guys are taking into account air conditioning into the estimate. My estimate started at 14.6 when I started the car with the air off. As soon as I turned it on it went down to 12.4.

    it's not the a/c, it's the fan. it's just warning you that you might have less ev depending on what cc you're operating. click the fan on and off and you'll see the ev toggle down and up.

    Although I'm not having too much trouble getting 17 or 18 miles actual even with the A/C on.

    That combined with low traffic volume compared to most places as well as nice drivers that just go around me if I'm going slower instead of ride my tail or honk.

    80 degrees f, car just loves the warm weather.
    Starting EV estimate, 17.2 miles
    Total EV miles traveled 20.3 with 1 pip left. Trip was from home across town and return.

    Seeing 17.2 would be incredible.

    No complaints though. My estimate has climbed to 13.3.

    it's interesting, 84 today and i'm getting more ev miles with the a/c on than i do in 70 degree weather.

    Wow, 20.3! That is awesome. Please tell us about that route. Many stop signs or stop lights? What are most of the speed limits like. Details please! :)
