2014 Honda Accord Hybrid Gets 49 MPG in City Driving

    I can see some synergy. Electric motor may be better to drive at low to mid speed and gas engine on the highway where most of the time it is constant speed. It is not as elegant or flexible as HSD.

    Honda design also need a big generator (about the same size as the motor) due to the nature of series hybrid. The illustrations I have seen shows both motor to be the same size. This points to higher cost.

    Also both HAH and FFH have 2.0L ICE. Camry hybrid has 2.5L -- more power and faster. If 2.0L Camry hybrid exists, it should get higher MPG in the real-world. But then, we don't have HAH real-world MPG yet.

    It's a three mode system. There is a parallel hybrid mode for urban driving and for power boost.

    That's John Voelcker's interpretation which I think is incorrect.

    Straight from the Honda URL you provided.

    "Hybrid Drive" for urban driving and powerful acceleration using the motor with electricity generated by the engine

    That's a series hybrid operation, not a blend of both parallel and series like HSD.

    I was wrong. One motor/generator is slightly smaller than the other. I bet the difference could be the power that the battery can provide (temporarily).

    Blending together is getting lot of airplay, but SPORT HYBRID diagrams seems to show serial hybrid operation, engine > gen > motor​

    It would be correct if it says "the power from Atkinson cycle engine blends together with the power from the battery". In the series hybrid, the power from the generator and power from battery can be combined to drive the traction motor.

    The instrument cluster does look cool. I hope it has useful information and not just sparkles and rainbow. The rear seats don't fold right? But it's a decent size trunk. If priced right, it can have a serious impact on the Camry, especially for those that prefer a sportier drive. Not many people know of or remember the 1G Accord Hybrid so I don't think that'll hurt them too bad.

    Besides being a power hybrid, I can't think of any reason why the gen1 Accord hybrid would hurt this one. The Civic and its battery issues on the other hand...
