My iPhone fried my amplifier

I have a 2012 Prius five. 7K miles on the car, I'm driving down the freeway and hear a loud static pop and all sound goes out.

I take it into Toyota and get a call the next day saying that my amplifier is fried (I have the Entune Navi with JBL).

They tell me it's from connecting my iPhone through the USB port, which I have never done. I rarely use my phone for music, and it's always connected through BT because I talk on the phone a lot, the Prius is my office.

The service adviser tells me it's typically not covered under warranty but they will good will it this time. I have a very large concern with this since he says I shouldn't have any issues hooking my phone up through BT, it's only when it's connected through USB.

Anyway, they ordered the amp, should be here in a couple of days. He said he will call Toyota and give me a better answer later. There's no way I'm going to pay $800-900 the next time this happens.

Anyone have this happen to their car? I don't even use any of the stuff on Entune, I just want to be able to use BT for phone calls and listen to XM/radio.

A pretty good example of service dept ignorance. A certain number of amps commit suicide regardless of how they are used. The JBL amp is completely separate from the head unit, (maybe under the floor), and it doesn't know what the source of the music is, nor would it matter. Since all the speakers apparently went dead, its likely a cooked power supply in the amp, which is something that just happens. It's also fully covered under warranty, don't let them tell you different. You'll also want to confirm that all speakers are functioning normally once it's repaired, occasionally an amp can take some speakers with it when it dies.

Using iPhone 4S with USB and Bluetooth no issues.

We're you playing music when it popped?

    Radio or DVD?

Was it raining out or any power surge?

Was there a Funny smell like burnt wires?

Most likely the car stereo was defective or some power surge fried it

It was a beautiful and clear night, I was listening to the satellite radio.

When I start the car now, I can hear a speaker pop noise, but have 0 sound.

    Sounds like a defective unit.

    What model iPhone ?

Is the USB cable old and dried out rubber?

Probably an alien death ray. ;) They can listen to your thoughts when you turn on the satellite radio. o_O

Anyhow, just remember that the "stereo" in the dash and the JBL amp are 2 separate physical devices. I doubt the service goons even know that. Hopefully they replace the right thing.

    It's an iPhone 5.

I've never hooked it up to a USB cable, just BT.

Right, the man is always trying to listen in.

They opened some case with Toyota, I think they called in.

I work with Subaru service departments and am pretty familiar with service departments, they probably called Techline who told them the steps they needed to take to rule specifics out.

I didn't realize the iPhone was powerful enough to zap an amp!o_O The service tech likely was giving you an excuse trying to make them look like the good guys. Sometimes you just want to tell them they're full of it, and just fix the damn thing!

I think your iPhone is not the culprit. Just a defective car stereo. I'm not a electronics expert but I did stay in a Holiday Inn once.

We'll see what they say when I come back to get it installed. It's annoying, I typically drive 200-400 miles a day and am sitting around at home because I can't stand being in the car with no stereo. I've been using my Jambox in the meantime when I do have to go somewhere.

Sounds like you'll have to take the other Prius out.

    Forgot to update this thread:

Got a new amp put in on Friday afternoon, drove out, 3 miles later the same thing happens.

I come back, the service advisor was in shock. I dropped the car off again last night, the field engineer came today to look at it and they found out that my left front tweeter is the issue. They ordered a new tweeter and I should have my car back Friday. I'll get more details on what exactly happened when I pick it up.

    My guess:

First time, the amp power supply was at fault. Just a bad part. When it went, it also took your tweeter.

The service department did a quick replacement without checking anything and the damaged speaker is now pulling tens or hundreds of times the power it should be depending on the method of failure and killed the new otherwise good amp.

Make sure when they replace it and the tweeter the third time, they ohm all speaker connections and verify the speakers are not shorted or opened.

    Jeeze, I'm smart. ;)
It's a pretty simply thing to put an ohmmeter on each speaker, measure DC resistance across the speaker posts. The only thing you need to look for is identical speakers that measure very different resistance, or no resistance, or infinite resistance. This can be done at the wiring harness, no need to pull speakers.

I hope they bother to check ALL the speakers before firing it up again, this could get expensive if they don't. Usually a tweeter doesn't have the ability to draw enough juice to cook an amp, it takes a woofer to do that.

One other thing; its also very possible you have developed a short in the wiring somewhere. Checking DC resistance at the plug on the amp will expose any shorts in the wires to the speakers. Of course, shorts can be intermittent too. :(

Well they replaced the tweeter and amp, I picked up the car last Monday. Wednesday mid day, guess what happened.

Dropped it off Saturday, in a loaner now and haven't heard from them yet.

Consider asking then to let you take it to a stereo shop where someone with actual knowledge of audio troubleshooting can sort this out. They must know of a shop that does custom installs or high-end work. Odds are it wouldn't be difficult to fix in the hands of an expert. My money is on an intermittent short.
