    Dennis,

I forgot to check my mileage after this morning's commute but because of the rain and wet roads I really didn't care about efficiency.

I charged up at work and drove home with mostly light rain but I stayed at 60mph and tried to drive like I would in the PIP to get 90mpg on the same trip. Here is the result. I know you like numbers. lol

F8L, I'm a bit jealous of your mileage! Don't be a stranger to these forums - your research on tires alone is invaluable! If I didn't have to use my car for business - carrying people - I would have seriously looked at the Volt. I sold a home to the General Sales Manager for the local Chev/Cad dealer and he really wanted to bring a Volt by to show me. But to fit 4 people comfortably and the occasional long trip loaded with luggage and a 100 lb Golden Retriever, it just wasn't practical for me. I do think the Volt or similar is the direction auto manufacturers will be going in so possibly my next car will have a similar drivetrain.

No worries. Bisco wouldn't let me go anywhere. ;)

I know where you are coming from. If my car was the primary people mover then I wouldn't have got the Volt. It wouldn't be practical. After our last trip to LA I realized that we cannot fit 4 adults (us and the 20yr old kids) luggage and the dog in my Prius. The Prius and Volt can fit 3 adults, luggage and the dog and that is really all I need since one "kid" is usually not with us. 95% of the time it is just me or me, my SO and the dog. :) For long family trips we'll just take the RDX as it gets 28mpg or so on the highway and is quite comfortable.

Legroom in the rear of the Volt would be terrible on a long trip and rear headroom is terrible for anyone nearing 6'.

There are always compromises it seems. Eventually a manufacturer will create something that is just right and they will rake in the cash as customers flock to it.

I sorta don't want to. It's my last tie to Priusdom besides my friends here. I'm not losing you and I'm not losing my sig! :)

I'd love to have a PIP for short, intown trips. Those trips kill my overall tank MPG's.

exactly. most of my driving is local, but with a pip, no matter what your driving habits, you get the best of both world's.

Looking good. Drive it like a PiP and stay within the speed threshold to get good results. 226 Wh/mi (15% charging loss added) for the downhill trip is good.

How about the same Energy Info screenshot for the morning uphill trip?

I'll get one for you tomorrow. I was going to get one this morning but the car wasn't fully charged. Grrrr maybe I'll have to save for a L2 charger. :p

Ohh here is the energy shot from my first morning commute. I thought I posted it. This was not a full effort or anything but it gives you an idea.
    image.jpg

I started in Mountain Mode a few miles before the steep part of the trip then I switched out as I exited the freeway and drove in EV again until I reached a charging station. I hear that the system won't count miles generated by MM as EV miles.

As a refresher, here is the elevation profile for my evening commute.

Yea, you need to do 8PM curfew in order to have enough hours to fully charge with a regular household plug.

Are you measuring kWh drawn from the wall? The kWh the car reports does not include charging loss.

Nah but I take that (charging losses) into account when doing my financial calculations. :)

I may switch rate plans with PG&E because I think the Volt is going to push us far beyond the baseline which would then change the price from $.13kWh to $.30kWh! If I have to install a second meter I may just go all out and put a L2 charger in. Clipper Creek is just up the street from me so I'm sure I can get a good deal.

You could always mod your EVSE to 240v and leave at home since you have a charge at work. Then it would take 5 hours to charge? That way you can just switch to E9A and not have to install anything in your home.

Don't you have SMUD for electricity in Sacramento?

I'm actually in Woodland but since most people don't know where that is and the fact I work in Auburn I just claim the whole territory. *grins*

With that commute, it's hard to argue with moving over to the Volt.

    Dennis,

    Here are my morning numbers.

The first shot is of my commute and right before I hit the start of the noticeable slope (not the steep one).
    20130627_053546.jpg

These two shots are my completed commute. I just kept it in CC and let the car do it's thing. I drove it carefully like I would the PIP. Keep in mind that the PIP gets about 29mpg on this same slope and that is with a warmed up ICE. The Volt ICE was cold.

Grrrr, I hate you F8L for your relentless passion for upgrades and the ability to do so. Come to think of it, I hate my HR for not being able to promise me the ability to charge at work until after I bought the car. I gambled they wouldn't allow it and purchased the PiP instead of a Volt. 1 way charge with a 100 mile roundtrip commute favors the PiP in costs. Now I'm just kicking myself looking at your mpg numbers. No one ever wants to sit in the 5th seat in my PiP with 2 car seats in the back, so that's a moot point.

I bet people are less likely throw a beer can on your windshield too because the Volt at least for now doesn't carry the 'slow Prius driver' stigma.

Alright, rant over. If I had purchased the Volt last year, I'd be pissed people are getting it for $4000 less today. So I can't have it all. Grass is always greener. I'm perfectly happy with my car. F8L, I wish I could follow in your footsteps.
